AOL Just Bought Advertising.com for $435 Million

Advertising.com is a major business so no telling what part of the value is attributed to the domain name but still an eye-popping transaction.

Further evidence of a huge rebound in ecommerce and advertising that is helping to fuel the domain market. Should have several years to run as we have just begun the upswing.

Great post Duke - Heard that this AM - Advertising.com = $132 million in revenues for 2003 and employs more than 300 people. That works out to be just less than 3 times gross annual revenue. I remember when the domain name sold for about $1 Million around 1998 when they started the company. Steve

This days you will see the AOL service it self filled with advertisments pretty much wherever you go... Mail, chats and all over the place! They have packed things up just recently and I wouldn't be surprised if they make 5x much that per month just from their current cliental... So 500 mill is nothing to them because obviously things are working out for them

But the business model here is different than just simple PPC advertising on the domain site. This is a great example of how one can take a premium name and make it prosper with a solid business model. Owning the top .com in any industry allows one to make huge headway.

The losses were doubling recently as well. So the underlying business model was very questionable. So they most have thought very highly of the domain name.
