    Bad Domain History

    I heard that if you buy a domain that expired and the previous owner had abused it, the domain retain the penalty?

    Is this true?

    If someone is starting out with a new site and goes to his/her domain registration company and buys what they belive to be a good name..surely it is just crippling them before they even get off the ground.

    Dotmonster, what are you referring to? From my personal knowledge, your comment was incorrect.

    let me clarify for you.

    a) it doesnt matter what the old owner used the domain for, you certainly can't be penalized for it in any way. Ignore people who say differently, they are wrong.

    b) checking Alexa.com (for free) or Dialog.com (for lots of money) will allow you to find out who owned a domain in the past.

    c) archive.org and doing a search at google.com will both let you see how the site was used.

    If the previous owner used the domain name to send spam, the domain could be listed on a blacklist. This can prevent your e-mail from be recieved by ISPs that subscribe to the blacklist.

    Another possible penalty, if the previous domain owner abused or spammed the a search engine, you can find out that it's now impossible to get that domain listed with that search engine.

    Sure, there are plenty of blacklists. Check here..

    http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/A...am/Blacklists/

    Most blacklists will ban IP addresses, some will ban the domain name.

    i have nothing useful to add, i'd just like to clarify my earlier statements. There is nothing *illegal* about owning a domain that was abused by its former owner, and you won't suffer any legal penalities. But the types of "penalties" that RJ mentions are also very true, so i apologize if i was misleading.

    Moral of the story - Don't buy used domains and contract chronic spam problems. Buy .info and .biz in mint condition.
