Eight companies reported raising $38 million, with a nice chunk of that going to Icera Semiconductor, a fabless semiconductor designer that raised a $10-million Series A co-led by Benchmark Capital and Atlas Venture, with each chipping in $5 million. The tight lipped company is developing a new class of processors designed to provide high performance with lower power consumption for use in end-user consumer and business-user products.
Meanwhile, Savantis Systems, a provider of database server consolidation appliances, said it raised $12 million in its Series B led by Sigma Partners with participation from Highland Capital Partners and Star Ventures. The company said it will use the funding for sales and marketing and business development as it plans to launch its product next month.
Finally on the personnel front, Espial, a developer of software for smart devices such as set-top boxes, screen phones, gaming consoles, and handheld devices, said former Spyglass president and chief operating officer Martin Leamy has joined the firm as CEO and director. Jaison Dolvane, who previously held the CEO post, remains president and a director. Mr. Leamy was president and chief operating officer of interactive television software maker OpenTV, and before that was president and chief operating officer of Spyglass, the startup that developed Moasic, the commercial Web browser software that Microsoft later used to develop its Internet Explorer. - By John Fuller
