The gay and lesbian community is a powerful cohesive force that has brought about changes in laws. That is something that can not be ignored. Their clout and lobbying capacity is huge and well funded.
Having a .gay domain would be another victory for them. Rather than gay cruises, gay clubs, gay all inclusives, gay laws being hidden in all the other searches, a .gay domain would help define that market.
This (gTLD's) is a marketing ploy. And whomever is behind the .gay extension have obviously done their homework and research well on this demographic and knows the monetary clout that this demographics has, controls, and spends.
In other words, it just makes good business sense.
And that is what this is ... a business decision.
do gays really want flowers only from flowers.gay?
(or books from books.gay)
Agree... It's almost laughable that some here believe it's necessary, and a good "business decision" Yeah, lets grant everybody a TLD because it's a good business decision. LMAO.
Like these are the only keywords that will be registered.. What about names like cock.gay or gloryholes.gay, Will these type of names define the market to?
LMAO.

small minds think small.
Highly, highly unlikely that this will be a domain for open registration.
To do so, would defeat the purpose of trying to define a market.
That remains to be seen.
However, small minds think small.
Enjoy the trip.
What group or force were behind the creation of those domains?
How big was the market?
How large was the audience?
Who were the demographics trying to be reached?
How many people were on line at the time of inception?
How were they promoted?
Who were they promoted to?
Using those for historical purposes is just that...history. History of the internet and domain names. Lets face it, those were not very well thought out and planned, were they. Even if they were well thought out and planned, the numbers of who those domains appeal to have to be very minuite to today's standards.
Anything being proposed or considered is not a guaranteed success. Nor is it a guaranteed failure.
We are seeing for the first time in internet history that rather the domain becoming a brand (as in the dot com boom) we are seeing the brand become the domain.
I do not think that the failures of the past are comparable to the time we are in now. There is no comparison in sheer numbers to global audience size and accessability to what those numbers were 5, 8, or 10 years ago.
I think today that society is so brand conscious that adoption and acceptance of a global brand TLD (gbTLD) would be much more widespread.
Domainers keep forgetting that they do not control the internet and internet usage. Nor do they control how, when, and where people access the internet.
If google, ebay, gap, ibm (assumptions) wants to dump a few hundred K into securing a registry and putting a few million into branding .goog, .ebay, .gap, .ibm and the billions of kids in the world all have these brands, clothes, and sites bookmarked on their phones - then it is a done deal, it is successful, and it is money well spent.
Same rhetoric we seen in the .mobi threads, Amazing what lengths some will go to justify an unnecessary TLD.

There is definitely a market for this TLD, no doubt. Do I think it is necessary? NO, but there will be a large number of people who profit from the extension, mostly resellers ~ but I can guarantee some big companies are going to jump on this .gay train, if I may, more than you all think. The gay community is a marketing machine and are filled with many loyal "members" who I will see have no problem punching in .gay after books, movies, etc.
Btw, when does .lesbian, .bi and .straight and .transexual come out?![]()
.Gay is brilliant! Huge market 5% of the population, segmentation where it's needed, a group of people that put a lot more effort into their shows and displays than mainstream the sites will look great, gives people coming out a place to try it first online, it's the biggest sub-society on Earth it deserves a TLD. Now you could argue that it's just not needed, even though you have no foresight if it will work or not, but what makes a TLD needed? Go back to 123.45.55.33 if you don't like domains. Don't go to .Gay for all we care, but stop this ignorant dictating what's best for everyone.
CamGirls.com MANY camgirl sites making up to $1,000,000 per day ~ Appraisal = $x,xxx
Social.com Comparison Only - Not brandable - Not generic - No revenue model ~ Appraisal = $10Million+++
NameNewsletter.com - free lists of available domain names
ZoneFiles.net (beta) - ccTLD and gTLD droplists
I don't know if it has been said but .xxx and .sex have a very good chance of being large underground extensions... Look at it this way. dotME, dotTEL dotASIA all had a good amount of exposure and I am sure millions were spent not $175K and none of them have taken off huge (hear me out). I run an IT department and I asked two of the guys who worked for me about .asia .tel and .me and neither had ever heard anything about them or knew they even existed and these are two guys who live on the internet...
that being said i am not worried... ICANN will be the only winner...
That is what we do not know. IF the answer is yes, then this is a very shrewd move.
As I mentioned, those was a fictitious scenario.
One that is not fictitious is ebay. All earlier readings show that they were one of the first to line up for this.
Ebay fits your example of all the extensions taken - except ebay!
