Coke could use the .coke tld
Pepsi could use the .pepsi tld
Ford could use the .ford tld
etc...
In other words any company can use their company name as the tld instead of com, net, org, etc, if they're willing to pay at least several thousand dollars for the privilege.
Is that whats being proposed?
I think it's a crappy idea...
I don't think it will ever come to be...
and I think .COM will be #1 forevermore...
Now I have to go get that ice tea I've been trying to get up
and go get for over an hour... I keep getting sidetracked...

ok the answer is NO!!! com rules .... but this still isnt good news for domainers...
Further dilution of the market. Just like the stock market. Keep printing money if the masses will buy them.
Edit: Perhaps this *could* be a good thing for domainers. As there become more & more extensions no one is able to remember / keep track of, the .coms/nets/orgs/cctlds may become more valuable as they will be the ones people can easily remember.

This is a move tantamount to sabotaging all the existing extensions, creating confusion to the mass, yet is capable of generating cash beyond their wildest dreams. Let's face it, that's life.![]()
I thought .mobi was taking over the universe just a few months back LMFAO![]()

News flash! .mobi and dot anything other than DOT COM sucks old camel balls!![]()
I'm buying credit, banking, loan, insurance related generics in .com, .net, .org with high search volumes/traffic. Will consider typos too! - PLEASE PM with name, info, & asking price!
I think ICANN will vote for this, and then start looking at implementation. That's where it will bog down for a good long while (there's just a lot of details that make this a little too messy to implement).
Hi!
I read that it will cost at least $50,000USD in order to register a new .extension. If this will ever be implemented, it will obviously not be a big hit and it will definitely not affect the domain market.
.Com is the King.
New extensions are only more money for Icann.
More spam, more scam, more Wipo.
New extensions are crap.
.com is like prime real estate in the REAL WORLD. Owning a premium generic 1 word .com is like owning a skyscraper in a huge city such as New York, London, Tokyo, and etc.
Yes the Government will always develop properties throughout the country, even in odd places, in rural places. But you can observe that the prime .com properties just like skyscrapers will continue to rise.
not the end but maybe the beginning.....................
did anyone ever tell these guys that humans are creatures of habit?

.com isn't going anywhere. Too much marketing $ has been invested in this extension for it to leave. This new idea will only benefit the .com!
No Problem Chump Change
The application fee for a domain name under the proposed system has not been set, but candidates estimate that it could range from €25,000 to €250,000, or about $39,000 to $390,000. Icann is also prepared to set up an auction system if competing groups bid for the same name. Private companies would reap their profit by selling the domain names to registrars, which would then sell them to individual customers.
The min. chars for these extensions?
3 char??
