Wow it's nice that ICANN has addressed this issue, I think this will be big in countries like China, Thailand etc where their local language is used in majority in print and media.

But In India English is more popular than the local languages. Folks tend to speak and read in English, there might not be a big impact in this scenario.

The Indian Goverment thinks about 3 to 5 % will use English Online.

All the big American Corps are climbing over themselves to provide service in Hindi and other Local languages.

If you know something they don't perhaps you ought to let them in on the secret!

I am not sure where you got that news from.

But here is why it doesn't have big Impact in India, India has 16 official Languages and about 178 Languages spoken by small % of people nationwide.
Because of so many languages Indians to Communicate are using English mainly when they have to deal with a person whose mother tongue is different.
So educated Indians speak in their Language and English as well. I think English is spoken by 48 % of the literate people.

As to Corporations providing service in local languages, Every state of India is like a nation in it's own sense in terms of population and they do have to talk local there

Incidentally, did you see the Forbes.com rich list for India. Gates and Buffet are going to get dethroned real soon.

    http://www.forbes.com/2007/11/13/ind...ndia_land.html

......"The exchange plans to offer IDNs in at least five to six Indian languages in the first phase that is scheduled to begin sometime in 2008.

According to NIXI, the entire process is more time-consuming because of the need to make the plan phishing-proof otherwise alternate identities of the same name can be created by different codes.

Initial registration for trademark owners aka 'sunrise period' is slated to open January 2008 onwards. While initial registration for individual owners or 'land rush' is expected to begin later in March 2008.

Meanwhile, ISPs are welcoming IDNs as they feel these have been instrumental in increasing Internet penetration across the globe. "........
