    EURid takes down .EU slammer

    Source: http://www.domainesinfo.fr/english/7...eu-slammer.php
The real .EU registry has taken prompt action to block a fake EU registry calling itself 'EU ID' from tricking .COM owners into registering the equivalent .EU domain.

EU ID Registry. Read it quickly and you'd be forgiven for thinking you're dealing with the real European registry EURid.

Add to that some cleverly designed emails, as shown above, complete with an official looking logo and a message in which the "registry" claims to be acting to reduce intellectual property infringements created by cybersquatters, and you get a potentially lethal trap.

A trap which might have caught out a number of unsuspecting .EU and .COM registrants, had the legitimate .EU registry not been ready to take emergency measures.

    Revoked

EURid started by posting a disclaimer on its own website to inform .EU registrants of the scam. "The company at issue is not a EURid accredited registrar and EURid does not have any kind of connection with it," the registry explained. "In the interest of our accredited registrars and in order to protect potential registrants, our legal team is now taking appropriate measures to handle this misleading behaviour."

Domaines.Info contacted the EURid legal team to find out what that action was going to be. "In order to prevent further damage to the public and the registrars, we have this morning not only revoked the domain name in question, but also a number of other domain names owned by the same registrar," said Herman Sobrie, EURid's Legal Manager.

Congratulations to EURid for acting so quickly to protect domain name registrants from such devious attempts at misleading them. The EURid legal team even went as far as driving to the address listed by the registrant of euidregistration.eu, the main domain name used in the scam, to physically check it out. Not surprisingly, no EU ID Registry was actually listed there.

I hope that other registries, and especially some ccTLD registries, take note that when action is needed it can and should be taken immediately.

    Well done.
