eu domain launches today

eu domain launches today

Quote:
OUT-LAW News, 07/12/2005

The first phase of the .eu domain name launch takes place today. Public bodies and holders of registered trade marks can apply for the names. Where two or more have legitimate interests in the same name, the first applicant will be the winner.
The European Registry of Internet Domain names (EURid) was expecting a rush of applications when it opened for business at 10:00 GMT.

During this sunrise period, applicants have four weeks to provide proof of their existing rights. If they cannot comply, the names will be released for others to register.

This phase of the registration process will last until 6th February 2006. Then the second phase begins, allowing company names and artistic names to be registered too. Finally, from 7th April, registration opens to all.

“I expect Europe’s top level domain .eu to become similarly important as .com”, said EU Information Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding last week. “For businesses, .eu will extend their marketing reach, while protecting them under EU law against cybersquatters.”

“As a citizen, a '.eu' address can help making your web presence or that of your school, university, or club more visible across the European Union. Europe’s new top level domain therefore offers a unique opportunity for modern online marketing across borders,” she added.

It is also a shambles as I am in the front of the queue being asked for documentation I don't have on my Ex Bloody Wife's Christian Name. I haven't paid the fee to be in this part of the process and as far as I am aware didn't want to be part of the initial sunrise period.

Best Regards

Re: eu domain launches today

All the generic terms I checked are showing "APPLICATION PENDING" and it's only day 1 of Sunrise 1. Can't wait to see what will be left for the land rush period starting 7 April 2006!!! It has become such a scam that come April 7 it will be renamed a swamp crawl.

I just looked up a lot of words and they all have pending.

How can they grant TM priority on so many simple generic words?

There is an old expression -
"Don't try to beat a 'con' at his own game".

In other words, the domain crooks are 3 steps ahead of everyone else.

Re: eu domain launches today

"Music" has 69 sunrise apps and "sex" has 226 TM applications. Noticed a Stephen Stock has apps pending for the England cities of : Leeds, Liverpool, and Birmingham. And Traffic Web going for a fair number of generics including "Paris.eu". Some board members here are utilizing multiple registars, but I don't see how that will help with a sunrise app - except maybe in landrush round robin later on. However, "England" is registry reserved (I assume all EU countries will be).

.EU registry should take lessons from the Afilias nightmare. Seems like the TM requirements will be more clear to all players this go round.

That's what I was afraid of, being put in the wrong bloody queue

These registrars will just submit your names and get it done with since all they promised to do to 'earn' their fee was to submit them. Whether you get it or not is inconsequential to the profits they make.

Re: European TLD successfuly launched today!!!

It was over before it even started.

I wonder how many hundreds of thousands of names will eventually be scooped by the few biggest non-European players and speculators like for example those from Caymans, Hong Kong and Korea?

Re: European TLD successfuly launched today!!!

on www.whois.eu you can check who got which names. And which applications are pending like second place and so on....
there are different searchengines for trademarks like http://oami.eu.int
it is easy to check if someone will keep the name.
I think all the guys that applied for the very good names also have the Trademark.

in some european countries it is very easy to get a trademark. Every one can apply for a trademark in a European Country.

Re: European TLD successfuly launched today!!!

.EU will be pretty significant. The diversity in Europe should be an advantage. In a sense, .EU crosses barriers and overcomes the distinction that separates the various European countries. As with all new extensions, I hope website development and promotion rolls out in force to get the general public familiar with .EU.

Hi Stocdoctor,

different laws in different countries.
For example in France you can protect everything as a trademark without problem until someone contradict. Thats one of the reasons why google has so much problems with searchterms in France.
In BeNeLux, it is also very easy and quick, you get a confirmatino within few days, and thats in BeNeLux enough to apply for a .eu!

I think, as soon the people start print the website with .eu on their businesscards Eurid has won.

English is always good, on our newsletter http://www.eurodns.com/info/alerts/08122005.php you see where the applications are coming from. The Point is, that I see that the most targeted keywords are primary english then the national language.
1. English
2. German
3. French
