Planet.com would be great for a lot of things: Hosting, online newspaper, astronomy publication, etc.
I cant believe an airline hasn't picked up fly.com

My 5-year old daughter needs a kidney transplant. Contact me if you're willing to join a potential donor pool.
I meant that Planet.com would be great for the company The Planet formerly Ev1 servers, currently they use ThePlanet.com
their reserve are set too high (although I think the domains are worth what they are asking). Maybe a big player will jump in, who knows?
any idea who "Flycor" or "Mcdonnell, Paul " are?
Both are parked at Networksolution
they have to set a high reserve for fly.com
it sold to them in 1999 for $1.5 million
Both this domains are worth several million dollars, but i think to get that kind of amount they should go for some live auctions like T.R.A.F.F.I.C.
I don't think a live auction will make much difference. I think these names should be marketed to the best potential buyer rather than auctioned off.
yes, fly.com is a great domain
no doubt about it
but planet.com is not so hot
nobody sells planets (yet)

I'll tell you right now, if I had the money, I would pay the reserve price for Fly.com without a second thought. The domain is priceless.
Fly.com is at least a $5 - XX million domain in terms of worth. $5 million would even be a last minute bargain price.
If Fly.com won't reach it's reserve 2 Mil+ - I would say that the domain market really stinks!
Fly.com is a great domain, it could be developed into some online airline ticketing system.
As a domainer, I'd love to see Fly.com reach reserve, and more...
But, in today's economy & market - sadly, I doubt Fly.com will get anywhere near that reserve....All the natural constituencies for that name are struggling these days.
On the other hand, there may be someone out there that has a lazy $50m lying around that might snap it up....lol
.
Sit.com - Boy.com - Husband.com - Issues.com - Oncologist.com
Fly dot com is a great name but it doesn't exclusively define a category, so it's not a must have generic name for businesses operating in that category. Fly has multiple meanings including urban slang and a flying insect, not helpful to a travel business. An airline or travel business could use instead:
flying (parked) - weaker search/cpc metrics
flight (redirects to travelocity) - similar search/cpc metrics
flights (developed) - stronger search/cpc metrics
The airline business is brutal in good times, tougher today. Gordon Gekko summed it up best: "Fuel could go up. Unions are killers."
Recent completed sales of category defining generic names with search/cpc metrics stronger than "fly":
cameras $1.5M 2006
software $3.2M 2005
pizza $2.6M 2008
Less focused and weaker search/cpc names have a history of selling for less. Strong focus can overcome weak search/cpc, for example vodka dot com exclusively defines a category of distilled spirits. It has weaker search/cpc metrics than fly and sold for $3M in 2006.
