Quality should always sell well, and possibly even better in a recession. My thoughts are that a major recession impacts the much broader class of lower-value names and emerging TLDs because there just isn't as much discretionary money around and people fear taking risks.

But this also is an opportunity to stock up cheaply for a later upturn.

It's worth more than $1,7mill IMO. I'm sure BA, AA, Continental, Lufthansa, KLM or any other major airline company would pay more. Great buy though.

    But, they didn't...

I'd be surprised if the owner hadn't offered it to all the world's major airlines - plus, maybe, corporate jet marketers, like Citation & Boeing - plus, maybe the larger travel operations, too. It seems the obvious thing to do.

I reckon getting $1.8m is a good effort.

I'm not saying it's not a remarkable domain name sale, but I'm only saying that it's logical it went that high and that he could probably even get much more. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but in time. Excellent sale never the less.

    HI

They will get a great return for it in years to come... not including the income it makes until then... nice sale.

    It wasn't an ordinary LLL

I would've definitely bought it if I had $1.8 million lying around...

How to "offer" to potential buyers

If one had a domain that appeared to relate well to say 10 companies with deep pockets, what would one say?

I would guess that to let the potential buyer know there are others in the list, perhaps there is a reserve, and maybe a length of time. Perhaps the best thing would be a tight bidding war. If a reserve is not perhaps pass that on as well, staying in touch with those interested and notify it will be auctioned?

Then failing a minimum there, delevol it yerself?

It went for peanuts in my opinion, considering how big the airline industry is I would have thought that it would have gone for a lot more.

I really think that some companies in various industries have not understood the power of nice domains such as fly.com
