I wish somebody would explain to people the distinction between a Generic, a Brandable and a TM. Schwartz has caused more confusion than enough over this. Most of the things he calls Generics are anything but. It get worse when you get into other scripts as most people think Transliterations of Generics are Generic, which of course they generally are not.
The common mistake in English names is the assumption Generic + Generic = Generic. Most of the time Generic + Generic = TM.

Don think chrome is any good , they tried to copy Firefox , yes its a bit faster than Firefox and a less memory hungry but it hasn't got all the feature Firefox has like loads of addons , while i like the minimalistic look that wont make me switch to Chrome it just doesn't work for me ! i think Google will eventually become like Microsoft

I think you are probably all missing the main point of this.

It is more about the Search Engine and its open source status. Having several different standards is not good for Google. They want to dominate online Apps and even OS. They want the full mobile experience. Having developers working to several different and largely deficient web-browsers is damaging their business. I don't think they are that worried about stealing your tiny revenue streams, it is probably more about strategic positioning themselves in relation to Microsoft. If they can get decent browser support and maintain a lead in web-apps, then they kill desktop-bound MS. If they can get everyone writing for their Webkit Engine, even if people are not using their version of it, then MS is as good as dead.

Lets's face it, why the stealth release. Are they worried you lot are going to react to their initiatives, or are they try to catch MS on the hop.

Regarding the 404 traffic, they do not redirect if the 404 page serves up more than 512 bytes. I have tested on a couple of sites and verified that it is the case.

Correct. I think it has more to do with their desire to kill off microsoft than anything else. Funny thing is, as time goes on, I'm thinking google is more the monopoly than MS is..

    Jacqueline,

Thanks for testing that 404 issue, I was concerned about Google Chrome bypassing my pages. Guess it means I need to make sure 404 pages hold some value to visitors (i.e. internal site navigation) and provide monetary value.

    South and Rubber Duck,

Yes, Google is taking Microsoft head on. With a browser they can further optimize their application suite as well as better collect traffic data. Google already has an operating system, this would give them a full package for the average user.

Unfortunately it puts them in a position to know what people are looking for no matter the search engine, to catalog their desktops with Google Desktop, and collect analytic to sell in the future. By profiling users (from multiple points) they may make advertising better, which drives a profitable part of their business.

    Best,

    Justin
