    my favorite part:

The Federal Trade Commission and the FBI's cyber division said that under existing laws, cybersquatting, in and of itself, is not necessarily a crime.

"If the intent of the [Web] site is to defraud or to commit some other illegal act, then it's a crime and we can possibly step in," FBI spokeswoman Cathy Milhoan said.

So cybersquatting is "internet fraud" but not a crime?

    Great piece of journalism there...

Re: google Coalition Declares War on 'Cybersquatting' and Other Internet Frauds - TMC

    I love this paragraph............

‘Cybersquatting’ refers to the practice of registering Web site domain names solely for the purpose of reselling those names to brand- or trademark-holders who require the domain to conduct effective business online.

So that means that if the 'brand- or trademark-holders' are already conducting 'effective business online' then cybersquating would not be occuring! Or that if your intention is not 'reselling those names to brand- or trademark-holders' then you are not 'cybersquating'.

If that is a direct quote as indicated then it shows that this non-profit making organization (CADNA) that has been set up 'to protect the interests of business and consumers engaged in e-commerce activities' is about as well organized and thought out as ICANN seems to be.

Re: google Coalition Declares War on 'Cybersquatting' and Other Internet Frauds - TMC

    my favs:

‘Cybersquatting’ refers to the practice of registering Web site domain names solely for the purpose of reselling those names to brand- or trademark-holders who require the domain to conduct effective business online.
There also has been a two-fold increase in the number of registered .com domain names since 2003, an indicator of how problematic cybersquatting has become.
Recent research indicated that cybersquatting increased 248 percent during 2006 alone.
    check your 'indicator' again!
and please... change the word 'cybersquatting' to somethin' else...

    Here's why...

    Cyber = Web
Squatting = to occupy (property) as a squatter (dictionary.com)

Now, let's look at the word 'squatter'

Squatter = a person who settles on land or occupies property without title, right, or payment of rent (dictionary.com)

Hm. I remember paying my dues annually.. So why 'squatters' - were owners and landlords of the web. BIG DIFFERENCE!

If you register, or registered a Typo/TM domain, then it should be called typosquatting, tmsquatting, squattingtm, or somethin' else.

Squatting, because you don't have the right to this name, brand, mark, land, etc..

what is 'cyber' have to do with it...

Phishing, another Internet fraud often associated with cybersquaters, cost U.S. consumers $198.44 million during 2006 (figures from the Internet Crime Complaint Center).
Phishing is a crime, so this is bad IMO :(

Re: google Coalition Declares War on 'Cybersquatting' and Other Internet Frauds - TMC

Much of the reason the misnomer "cybersquatting" came into being dates back to the late 90s (after the era of free regs, which stopped in 1995) when many people registered large swaths of domains without paying for them...

Back then, registrants could register and use their domains for 30 days to sometimes upwards of 90 days before they were deactivated due to lack of payment; Network Solutions (a different company than the current NSI) invoiced fees (new 2 year regs were $100 and then after a lawsuit later discounted to $70) back then, which led to much abuse...

... in particular by many who regged TM related domains ... and hence the term "cybersquatting" was born and usage perpetuated by the mass news media - and that continues to this day.

...which I would like to add was completely legal and socially accepted based on the world wide well known tradition of "first come, first served" and if someone wants what you have then they have to pay for it! I still really don't see what the hell is wrong with this..honestly.
