The need has been here for a long time to more closely monitor registrar behavior. This was one of the most abusive attempts ever at exploiting the registrar accreditation process. If penalties are imposed, maybe this will act as a wake-up call for other registrars who are abusing the drop catch process. The same "warehousing" and speculation problem is occurring in widespread fashion.

Were they actually registrars thru Icann?

To be a registrar with .EU, all you needed to do is give them $ 10,000.
That is the exception to the rule with the other tlds.

The .EU registry is to blame for part of this problem. And, the only reason
they are stepping up now is because of political pressure.

I believe the real problem with the .EU domains is the introduction of Benelux
    (and others) TMs.

I think it was very smart move by the mobi people to restrict the acception of TMs
unless they were filed before a specific date.

That is also not fair. But, it is not there job to be the TM policeman.

I speculate that eventually .EU will lose most of the case.

They will win part of it, just to save face.

Not referring specifically to Pool though there's enough smoke there to suggest a fire, imo.

Yes, and ICANN have been made aware. So the onus rests with their lackadaisical crowd. Public criticism and pressure are the only thing they understand or respond to and the more blatant registrar abuses will weigh down on the credibility of ICANN if they continue to look the other way.

Let me say it this way: Registrar warehousing is wrong, becoming well-documented, and will test ICANN's balls, resolve, and competence as an overseer. The .EU mess is somewhat the straw that broke the camel's back and finally has people asking the right questions.
