TM issues will only apply if there is a registered trademark in Hindi, any registered mark in English will have no relevence as there is no visual similarity.

News.com won't give you any rights on समाचार.com as there is no visual confusion.

Yes, this issue of who is going to be using computers is the key. If it essentially does grow much beyond the educated outsourcers, then English will dominate a very tiny internet. The Indian government has ambitions to grow the current internet to cover as a much larger proportion of the population. Most of these people are not fluent in English, so the alternatives are to bring the internet to them all in their own languages or to force them on mass to learn English in a very short time frame. They have concluded that the latter is not realistic. This is why there huge support for localisation of computer applications. Microsoft are already well down this road. I don't think they would go there purely on the whim of the Indian Government. I think they would need to be convinced that the market was there!

my other concern is that if they type in IDN the names why they should type the extension in ASCII and not in IDN that too?

Yes, a lot of people worry about that. At the moment you can only represent dot com in ASCII characters but ICANN are in the process of introducing multichannel Aliasing. This will probably be done at the Root using the Verisign DName Proposals which are going to be testbedded in July. There is an alternative possibility of putting a whole load of IDN extension directly into the Root, but I don't personally think that is a runner.

Chinese already put in dot com in ASCII. They start in Chinese and end in Chinese to doing this for IDN is certainly no more of an inconvience that doing it for ASCII!

but is it possible that these people did not request this years ago?
What they have been using so far? That`s why all the numbers were gone because instead of typing unknown letters of ascii they preferred digit numbers, it make sense, I guess you will become billionaire if you really have those premium names, well done. Most people will probably envy you but someone who studied so much just deserve to success.

Re: google Number Of .CN Domain Names To Surpass .COM Domain Names In China ... - Pacific Epoch (subscription)

Firstly - nice question ItalianDragon

Secondly, if you believe in the Indian Government - say be prepared to wait

The lack of reach of the internet in the rural masses is not because of the connectivity or language barrier but because of infrastructure

Hindi i believe is the official language but the inside story is that it is a taboo in south india * ask a tourist who was travelled in south india - specially CHENNAI

also to the rural indian bank.com will be very irrevelant but more like icicibank.com - TM issues

localization is the trend but then MS word in English is still popular over its hindi compatriot....India is the breeding grounds of the future and future talks English...we have free education schemes where u get free meals to come to school and even then english was given primary importance ... i myself have taught in evening classes to the poor and guess which subject i was teaching

And the purpose of microsoft coming in india for localization ....well we had a lot of controvercy there

hey bro no offence ...dont want to derail you....i am also like a you and admire u when u say...you stand by what u say......I myself have faced a lot of critics early in life........sometimes your gut feeling can send you to early retirement...
Just a word..............

Have faith in your stuff and i love my language....never know someday i might come knocking at your door

The Chinese have been pushing hard for this for nearly ten years now. The problem is that the Internet has been run by people that really had no great intererst in IDN. The interest is there now, as the issues are crystal clear. Either get it sorted or the Unified Internet will go down the tubes and ICANN will virtually cease to exist. Faced with such a stark reality, it is not surprising that something is finally happening.

I think billionaire is pushing it a bit but there will certainly be a group of speculators that make $10M or more and $100M is likely in some instances.

Re: google Number Of .CN Domain Names To Surpass .COM Domain Names In China ... - Pacific Epoch (subscription)

English probably was the past but certainly will not be the language of future for the masses in India.

In Indian context "Learn English for better jobs" will prove to be one of the greatest myths of future. Why? Let's analyse how globalisation will affect India. Globalisation will lead to opening of Indian markets for multinationals like WalMart et al. And the aim of these companies will be to sell their products irrespective of which language their products are sold in. The natural choice of marketing here will thus be local lingos. Opening of markets will create hugeee job opportunities for "smart people" - those that can do their job irrespective of what language they speak in. Its logical to think that you cannot use English to sell products in India. One simple current example pointing to this trend, local telco companies, including Reliance have hired local for their call-centres catering to local folks.

Now lets examine why English earlier was thought to be necessary in the first place. Because it enabled people to move out of the country etc etc. This will happen no more as there will be ample job opportunities within India itself. Infact, there is an exodus of braindrain in the reverse direction as we are communicating.

There was a recent review journal article somewhere which predicts that the trend for hindi usage the world over will increase within the analysed period between now and 2050. On the other hand usage for English is predicted to decline in the same period.

Aside, a rising power will never let go of its original identity.

Cheers!

I am aware of a very high $xx,xxx - $xxx, xxx deal that is in negotiation at this moment and am aware of at least one other similar potential deal. Both of these involve end users.
The interested parties have insisted on complete confidentiality so unfortunately you wont ever hear about it...

Well, you have already told us the consideration is $100K or thereabouts. No IDNer is going to be able to conceal his identity with that amount of money burning a hole in the bottom of his pocket. It is likely that seller is an early entrant and so has primarily been active in the new reg scene to date. With the ready cash and the knowledge of the retail market, he will be straight back into the secondary market. No amount of confidentiality is going to make it worth passing up on the market opportunities.

As for the buyer, he too is not likely to leave the site undeveloped for long. The sight will be very high profile in the present market.

The community at IDNFs will take about 10 minutes to put 2 and 2 together!

I have thought about this and wondered also. But I realize now that it's all some people can do. Aside for the fact that IDN is totally obvious. Not everyone can do translations, check overture, google scores, ppc bids and reg a decent name. These will be the ones that continuously argue already defeated points in an attempt to derail or hinder something they can't possibly understand.

Let's face it.. Doing all that is a hell of a lot more work than pulling "thisdomainsucks.com" out of your butt.
