ICANN may seek escape from U.S. lawsuits and control - perhaps move to Switzerland

Very Interesting News.com article about ICANN's possible intentions to escape being regulated by the U.S. Government and protect itself from lawsuits, to become an international organization like the U.N.

Re: ICANN may seek escape from U.S. lawsuits and control - perhaps move to Switzerlan

How would a powerless, self-absorbed ICANN accomplish anything then? Where is the petition to disband ICANN and start over?

I mean, governing the internet TLDs is nothing like the Olympics or Red Cross. Perhaps they just want to party on other people's dime with no accountability. Both the olympics and red cross have had plenty of scandal.

I predict the US government ending up with control over the whole shooting match, in the wake of recent scandal and this idiotic move by ICANN...there's just too much money and control at stake here for them not to make a BIG move.

Re: ICANN may seek escape from U.S. lawsuits and control - perhaps move to Switzerlan

... The Bush administration doesn't appear to like the idea of ICANN becoming an independent international organization. In fact, instead of letting ICANN slip further out of its grasp, the administration seems to be tightening its grip on the Marina del Ray, Calif.-based group.
This actually has little to do with "the Bush Administration". ICANN are being properly scrutinized because they have made a series of decisions that call into question their competence and impartiality.

In fact, ICANN have made a case for even tighter control and accountability of their processes. What we need is an organization that embraces its responsibilities in a genuine effort to serve higher purposes. ICANN was created for the very important mission of proper governance of the domain name system and its growth. They OWE answers. One should expect that they can clearly justify every decision they make. They are not some private corporation who exist for their own profit.

If it's true that ICANN are trying to slip away from US regulation to achieve less oversight, then you are witnessing deceptive underpinnings. For ICANN to further wriggle out from under closer observation is a very bad direction ... and a signal that they are no longer equipped to oversee the DNS.

ICANN has been behaving just like a Bush admin department. ICANN has really FEMA'd the registerfly case (they FEMA'd totalnic.net the same way).

The direction ICANN would take under Bush would be: LESS privacy, MORE trademark seizures, and complete INACTION to protect individuals and small business. Of course, ICANN is already doing just that. What's to change?

Good to see ICANN looking for new ways to take responsibility for their actions.
