IDC: Internet ad revenue to double by 2012

Marketers can expect to spend much more money online in the next five years. This also means consumers will be seeing more online ads, so marketers should get inventive with the process. According to a recent IDC study, online ad revenue will surpass $51 billion by 2012.

    by Kristina Knight
In 2007, online ad revenue was $25.5 billion.

Will definitely be interesting to see how the internet develops over the years

However I'd imagine without any show-stopping chances like "net neutrality", it'll be the same but just bigger and more focussed on emerging markets.

I researched somewhat about Moore's law. Processor performance equals roughly 3D complexity and multiplies by 10 every 10 years, memory capacity equals roughly 2D complexity in physical dimensions to manage and multiplies by 100 every ten years, network bandwidth equals roughly 1 dimensional complexity in terms of physical laws to overcome and multiplies by 1000 every ten years. Therefore we shouldn't expect any problems with internet bandwidth! The same is true for wireless/radio, there's also a Moore's law for wireless: http://blogs.zdnet.com/open-source/?p=2995 Unleashing the Moore's Law of radios at last There are even factors additionally increasing performance of IT systems over time, and in the end we will have a wireless internet, if necessary some day working even without hubs and root servers like a p2p network, for basic services at least, IMO that's our chance, the chance for freedom. http://www.embedded.com/design/multicore/216200003 "While "Moore's Law" is mostly focused on geometric scaling in continuing shrinking of horizontal and vertical physical feature sizes of the on-chip logic and memory in order to improve density (cost per function reduction) and performance (speed, Power) and reliability values to the applications and end customers. "More of Moore" is about equivalent scaling which occurs in conjunction with, and also enables, continued Geometrical Scaling plus non-geometrical process techniques that affect the electrical performance of the chip. The third element is "More Than Moore" is about functional diversification. The "More Than Moore" refers to the incorporation into devices of functionalities that do not necessarily scale according to "Moore's Law," but provide additional value to the end customer in different ways."

Another 3 things I want to add:
    1. there might be advances to include access to the internet to the basic human rights
    2. anytime new technologies and independent enterprises can come up breaking the restrictions of communication (quantum entangled brain interfaces as an endpoint, anyone?)
    3. for the near future: thanks to the routing capabilities of the current internet technology I hope we can take advantage of emerging country's investments in it's infrastructure.

Will your children say "why didn't you act?"

Update from Alex Jones on Internet Censorship:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcS3f6Sx524

    Also:
Could deep packet inspection be the "rootkit equivalent of the internet"? It could compromise free internet economy (and is the technology behind chinese internet censorship infrastructure, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_packet_inspection ):
    http://www.zeropaid.com/news/9663/ci...et_inspection/

see this "case study": http://www.zeropaid.com/news/9541/wi...million_times/ (could they steal your Adwords clickthroughs you are paying for?)

Deep packet inspection is also being discussed these days in Germany (in German, http://www.dradio.de/dlf/sendungen/computer/938186/ )

    That was fast:

    Top breaking news:
    http://www.thelondondailynews.com/yo...st-p-2881.html

    12 May, 2009 04:30 (GMT +01:00)

    Youtube censors US Journalist

    News Desk
Radio and internet journalist Alex Jones has been censored by the internet giant Youtube with the removal of the "Alex Jones Channel" from the site, causing revulsion across the United States and Europe, in what is increasingly being seen as another example of a "Big Brother" intervention in the democratic process.
Alex Jones best known for his investigative journalism around the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre and his conspiratorial theories describes himself on his website infowars.com as:
"Syndicated radio journalist and documentary filmmaker Alex Jones has been on the front lines of the growing global information war from ground zero to the occult playgrounds of the power-mad elite."
The "Alex Jones show" on YouTube was attracting around 1 million views a week, and was responsible for the "The Obama Deception" which has clocked 1,897,810 views.
YouTube apparently pulled the "Alex Jones Channel" from its site for a potential legal action from a US newspaper claiming a potential copyright breach over Jones use of its articles on his radio programme.
