IE 7.0 has Arrived!

Update:

Actually, it now being pushed on Home Page at the BETA 2 Has all but been dropped.

http://www.microsoft.com/

--------------------------------------------

Whilst stll marked Beta 2, IE 7.0 is actually more or less being pushed as the Internet Explorer for XP!

Go to the main Windows Page

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/default.mspx

Under Technologies You have the Option Internet Explorer (either right or left hand side)

Clicking on this takes you straight to the IE 7.0 Download Page. Only then do you see an Option for IE 6.0, If you click on that the first link you get to is EI 7.0 again!

If from the Windows Page you click the XP Home Page. What do you get? Surprise, Surprise you get IE 7.0.

IE 7.0 is now the De Facto Default Web Browser Option for XP. They really could not be pushing it harder without including it on the Automatic Update Feature.

This is going to make the value of IDNs skyrocket.

Taken from the ieblog

Quote:
For those of you outside the United States, we will release German, Finnish, Arabic, and Japanese versions over the next three weeks.

For this Beta 2 release, we’re taking the extra step of offering no-charge phone support to consumers in North America, Germany and Japan. We’re offering phone support to encourage people who usually shy away from beta software to try IE7 Beta 2. We believe that IE7 - even at this beta stage - is a significant improvement and we want as many people as possible to try it and use it. IE7 is feature complete and has been through significant compatibility and reliability testing. People (especially technology enthusiasts) will have a good experience with it.

If it doesn't work then the only thing that will be going down the toilet is Microsoft! There is very little risk of that, however, as most IDNers have been running the previous version for months with very few issues!

Re: EI 7.0 has Arrived!

Deny what exactly? IDN was the buzz word at Roundtable last week. Thousands are changing hands on the Forums here and the Chinese can't wait to get hold of EI 7.0. They don't even call IDN that, to a Chinese an International Domain Name is a dot com! They call, what we call IDN, simply Chinese Domains.

The roll out is continuing as we speak! IE 7.0 is now given top featuring on the Microsoft Home Page!

Well you may not be able to figure it but I have an IDN that has has over 5,000 type-in in a month with only patchy browser support, so whatever the problems the Chinese are obviously way ahead of you on this one. Actually one of the work arounds is to simply hit the Caps Lock! IDN.IDN will be here by year end and you obviously don't browse Chinese sites, so I wouldn't worry your little head about it!

Yes, unless of course the US actually decides it would be prudent to try and do something positive about the trade deficit other than simply blaming it on the Chinese!

The test bed for all Chinese domains will be running in the next quarter. These domains will not be new extensions just different manifestations of what is already out there. Indeed a Chinese Browser will see the extensions of your ASCII domains (dot Coms to you) in Chinese as well!

Yep, that's around mine too -- with <1% IDN compliant browser use.

I think a multiple of 50x is conservative. 80x is about right. Now multiply that across n domains. :-p

Firefox virtually doesn't exist in Asia. The uptake of IDN enabled browser to date is neglible. Even extrapolating traffic growth 50 to 100 times is to miss the point totally.

You try direct navigation a couple of times. It doesn't work so you give up. If, however, you try it a couple of times you may not only go on to do it several thousand times yourself, but you may show all your friends too.

Frankly, someone who cannot understand that people want internet address in their own language can only be described as a bit dim. The only thing about the Chinese Internet that isn't Chinese is the web addresses, and the Chinese feel so strongly about it that they went to the brink of destroying the integrity of the Root to get what they want. They suggests to me that they are fairly serious.
