This is very interesting read indeed.
It shows how out in left field is paying "monthly revenue times X months or years" is.
Plus, doesn't increase in sales for 1 word .com generics also increase value across the board for 1 word in other extensions and 2 (or even 3) keyword .com generics? So it's good news for all, isn't it?
On a related note: I think that petrosc mentioned that prices for 1 word generics are out of reach for the average or new domainer. So building a strong portfolio is that much tougher today. I couldn't agree more. However, I think that the average domainer still can get hold on marketable domains, even invented names, and create revenue via development. Think Travelocity.com, Expedia.com, and others.
Think, too, how long did it take for a domain reg'd in 1996 to make strong revenue. I don't know for sure, but I imagine a few years. So there are no short-cuts.
