Well I have Blue in Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Kannada and Tamil, but investing in pinklight is not something which would ever have occurred to me. Just goes to show.

Congratulations big time. My take on it, you got the premier domain of Malta on the internet for the price of a 1 bedroom apartment on the island. I know what I would prefer, providing the website is properly developed, you just got yourself a steal.

Yes, that's the reason why big players avoid IDNs, it's too time consuming and time to big players is expensive, 90% of the people into IDNs are newbies.

Apologies over that, I had spelt it wrong, but then again that is precisely the problem with transliterated names. How long did we spend calling Beijing by the name Peking. The great advantage with the Hanzi characters is that they are totally unambigious, and will therefore help to prevent phishing attacks in Asia.

http://www.google.com/trends?q=%E6%9...o=all&date=all

No, but if the main domain for Malta is worth $250,000 the main one for Beijing has to be worth 100 times that amount, and the IDN is still out in front. Once China gets online proper there really will be no contest.

Not quite sure what is going on with Taiwan but I suspect you don't have the key term for that one. I will check it out.

Yes, as I thought there are at least two more popular local terms for this:

http://www.google.com/trends?q=Taiwa...o=all&date=all

Figures for Tapei are as follows:

http://www.google.com/trends?q=Taipe...o=all&date=all

Yes, these figures would indicate greater usage of the English Forms, but then the Chinese have their own search engines, so the Google results are almost certainly skewed towards US traffic.

I think what he is trying to say is that Yahoo has the predominant marketshare in Taiwan, or Google trend would be more skewed towards foreigners working or traveling in Taiwan.

Yes, I am basically trying to say that the market is skewed because Google doesn't dominate the local search. Yahoo is big in Taiwan and Baidu is very big in the PRC. Both of these are likely to be picking up more local search than Google who by contrast will be picking up much higher percentages of its search from the US. Consequently, if I were to be offered either domain now but could only collect in three years time, I would select the IDN. If I could have either now of course I would choose the ASCII, flog it and buy the IDN with the proceeds!

Re: Malta.com gets 250,000 on Sedo

Sales at Sedo blow my mind daily. This is simply no explanation from anyone in here or anywhere else why someone buys some of these silly names. It's great to see such a diversity of names sold though, so no complaints. It means end users are most likely in the mix.

on the IDN front, I believe we have something great there but one thing is uncertain. How long will it take? The business world speaks english and that is not going to change. How long will it take for China and Arab world to use the internet as efficiently as the US & Europe? It remains to be determined and while it may be tempting to answer Rubber, we simply don't know, none of us know. I will agree that China alone represents more potential than anything imaginable. Cheers

I don't know if that is aimed at my purchase. If it is you should realise the domain will earn it's money back in 3 to 5 years AND I will still have the domain I find it surprising that people can't understand why a domain for a tourist country that receives 2000 uniques per day would be worth the price paid for it. I would have paid more.

I think he was unaware of how big is the tourism in Malta.....

but anyway 2000 daily are much less than what I was expecting......there are plenty of websites that get even 20,000 daily but don`t even dream to get that money.....sure it`s the top name for it`s Country otherwise 2000 daily won`t justify that price.

True, but substantially irrelevant, it is the language of the individual consumer that is most pertainent. Mostly that will not be English.

If you have a domain that has 20,000 views daily and you can't turn that into $250k in 5 years then I think you need to recheck your business plan

Well, yes their are probably over a billion people that speak a smattering of English, but this is about as misleading as the CIA assertion that most Indians speak English.

What we are really interested in here is statics relating to the languages people actually use when they are relaxing in their own homes, which is what they will probably surf the internet for much of the tme and will be the language that governs most of their purchasing decisions.

I was really astounded when the Internet came on line at the shear amount of factually information available. The problem is that as time goes on your realise that much of this information varies from second hand poorly researched assertions to absolute b*ll*cks.

Facts in India are all conferming that English is and will be the most used language. I read yestarday a news about IT boom in India and the fact they`re hiring americans to fill their needs, opposite of what happened few years ago when Indians were going to Usa to find high paying IT jobs.
I think that between 5 years there will be half world of Internet users using 2 languages:

English and Chinese.
I guess we have to wait and see.

B*ll*cks. Corporate America is going all out to localise every aspect of Internet Access in India. This would not be necessary if what you are is ascerting were even remotely credible.
