Better Business Bureau warns of Michael Jackson memorabilia scams
Baltimore Business Journal - by Wesley DeBerry Staff
***Note I could not find it on "EBay".
SourceThe amount of Michael Jackson memorabilia for sale on eBay increased nearly 10,000 percent the morning after the pop star’s death from a possible heart attack.
And with that surge, the Better Business Bureau of Greater Maryland is cautioning buyers about purchasing fake merchandise. The increase in memorabilia makes buyers more susceptible to price inflation, counterfeits and internet scams that can threaten sensitive information, officials said.
“Following the death of Princess Diana, the market was flooded with mass-produced items commemorating her death, including special edition Beanie Babies that at one time sold for more than $100 but are now on garage sale tables for a buck,” said Angie Barnett, CEO of the Better Business Bureau.
Sellers listed an average of 200 to 400 Michael Jackson memorabilia items daily on eBay, but the number spiked to 20,000 after his death, according to Smartmoney.com, a web site that covers Wall Street.
Michael Jackson sold 750 million albums during his four-decade music career, according to the recording industry publication Billboard Magazine. Jackson’s “Thriller” album is one of the top-selling albums of all time, with 40 million copies sold around the world.
Michael Jackson memorabilia is selling for anywhere from $21 million — for the michaeljackson.com Internet domain name — to $1.79 for a Michael Jackson collectable vinyl window sticker.
The Better Business Bureau has not received any official complaints about fake merchandise, but they have seen e-mail scams that use Michael Jackson’s death as a ploy to get harvest people’s sensitive personal information. Barnett said the scam e-mails might say “download a secret Michael Jackson video” — but when a person actually clicks on the e-mail, they are really downloading a so-called trojan horse program that can access passwords and other sensitive information off a computer and send it to a remote location.
The Better Business Bureau advises people to do research before buying any Michael Jackson memorabilia, confirm its authenticity with a third party, make the purchase with a credit card and look for sites that are approved by the Better Business Bureau to ensure legitimacy.
Wrong... They are referencing the "michaeljackson.com" domain, but it's actually mjsmemorial.com as I recall for that price.
In fact, if you google that, it's the first thing that comes up as an ebay auction.
-1 feedback: BEWARE this guy sells large ticket domains he does not own davidkentonline (private) Jun-29-09 23:50
The thing is I see crap names on ebay with ridiculous prices (well maybe not this ridiculous), all the time. What's the point? I don't think anybody in their right mind would pay that kind of money for a shit name like that.
Offer him a hand grenade so he can pull the pin and see what happens.
First of all Sony owns MicahelJackson.com. Second there is no way they would sell it for any price right now. The negative press they got from pulling a dick move like that would be amazing.

Are there any buyers to buy those kind of domains? People are ready to sell worthless domains but why do someone will buy it?
I highly doubt that ANYONE would buy them.....After I read this thread, I checked ebay out and there are scores of MJ domains for sale now with a couple of dozen listed at 10 million+ I seriously wonder about someones state of mind that they would spend (re. WASTE) their money on reg. these domains and then listing them for sale at those prices!!! Are they just looking for attention or do they seriously think that someone will say " hmmmm only 21 million for that...I think I'll buy it"
would not mess with that too many legal issues

anyone want to create a fake ebay account and buy it? he'll get some massive final value fee hehe
i know he'll get that back but thats after a week or more
I reg'd MichaelJacksonpedia.com so someone could make an "everything you ever wanted to know about MJ. I think they are too mired down in legal battles right now to focus on small matters such as domains. Plus, I know an actual Michael Jackson, I can always just give it to Him.
HighPriceDomains.com ! The World's most Expensive domain names
I could see it as a potential legal battle.
lol. Unlike those ebay'ers, I'd be happy to get a hundred. Or i'll just transfer it to Mike.

bubbles is banned from the funeral so i think he regged and listed it on ebay.
a case of sour grapes. or sour bananas![]()
maybe part of the proceeds can help the broke city of la pay for the funeral while they're closing schools and charging parents for summer school.
