    .MOBI crashes Sedo... WOW!

    MOBI Auction Will Be Extended

    We are aware the there are some problems with the .MOBI Auction at this time. Due the down time we were not able to extend the auction before the set closing time. Some bidders may have received emails saying that they have won the auction, however because the system was down the highest bid at the time the system failed are not binding according to our terms and conditions. The auction will be up and running very shortly and will be extended by 20 minutes to ensure all interested parties can place their bids. While this is unfortunate, the good news is that the problems are due to the large number of last minute bidders! This is the first time an auction has brought down our servers due to such a large amount of activity.

    While this is unfortunate, the good news is that the problems are due to the large number of last minute bidders! This is the first time an auction has brought down our servers due to such a large amount of activity.

    .mobi "the most dominant/accomplished domain extension to emerge since .com" ?

    Vision, you should be a writer for the Science Fiction pulp mag.

    The domains on auction are the major keywords that are known to generate traffic revenue in any extension. Even games.crap would be a hot seller. The only difference is, the .mobi TLD REQUIRES that the domains get developed So add the development cost to any price listed. I wonder how many poor .mobi lemmings failed to read the small print of the contract.

    .mobi was introduced in September 2006
    .tv in 1996 (11 years old)
    .info in 2001 (6 years old)
    .net in 1985 (22 years old)
    .org in 1985 (22 years old)
    .com in 1985 (22 years old)

    2.) .mobi sales

    Here is a domain sales analysis snippet by Rick Schwartz:

    "Global contenders. Their range for the year is $15,000 to $300k. Here is the BIG answer. Of the top 100 there are 28 .mobi's occupying those spots.

    .net = 43
    .mobi = 28
    .org = 16
    .info = 9

    Lastly the country codes. With the exception of two 6 figure sales, the range was $10-$85k. That also included .cc, .tv IDN and some 335 individual country codes competing for this spots.     For the record, 1985 cannot be rendered as the starting date of .com, which did not achieve commercial status till 1995 (the introduction of paid registrations). Therefore, subtract 10 years from that 22-year figure.

    Second, as I already stated in that other thread, with each new TLD the game becomes a repetition:

    1. Announce new TLD
    2. Reserve hot-selling keywords
    3. Open the floodgates
    4. Wait a while to create hype
    5. Auction the reserved keywords

    Etc.

    .mobi is easily the most HYPED TLD in domain history. Hype is commotion without substance.

    Throwing in a few names of domain investors in your first post, alleging they are right this minute bidding on sedo's mobifest, is exactly what hype is. Faux news style.

    hmmm was that really the caused by mobi but i do agree with Arco that much of creation of the dotmobi has been through hype but that hype i think has worked ! , to be honest i haven't thought of buying a premium com name mainly because i haven't got the money but i am thinking if i should buy a generic/premium mobi .......

    I'm waiting 6 months to see where the .mobi bandwagon goes. If I can pick up a premium name for cheap, then fine. But I'm no way spending xx,xxx on an untested extension.

    Exactly these very steps and may be more new ones will be added to new TLD launches. Honestly this domain business is still in its infancy. Different methods will be tried out to market the new ones. It is the .COM that created market for .MOBI or anything else that will come in future. If we can decide what is success and what is failure in just one year, it would be great but I guess it is too quick. Marketing methods are evolving and will be evolving and .MOBI used the best of methods to create a stir in the market. This persists or perishes only Time will tell.

    Is it just me, or does it seem quite probable that mobile technology will quickly evolve to render this extension useless? Simply put, two seperate website versions cost more than one, thus making "convertable" browser technology [either mobile based, or web based] for smaller mobile devices the only possible outcome.

    This has been addressed by Apple iPhone enthusiasts/technologists...

    Here is one of their perspectives....

    The iPhone has completely changed how I interact with information on the go. When I travel I leave the notebook at home. I take the iPhone, an Airport Express for the hotel room (or anywhere) and an APC power pack for heavier use days. Everything else lives on a 8 GB USB stick or "the cloud." The exception is if I think I am going to need to create or edit rich content, like a Powerpoint deck.

    Still, for all of the enthusiasm about the iPhone and it's ability to browse most of the broader web, it's made me realize that there will always be a place for the mobile Internet. More than two-thirds of the time I am accessing the web from my iPhone, I am connecting to mobile or "iPhonized" sites that are in between the stripped down versions and the real thing. This includes when I am using wifi. I have two bookmarks for many of my favorite sites - one for the mobile or iPhone-specific version, another for the real thing.

    That's bad news for web developers who are hoping that one day they won't need to re-code sites for handheld devices. The problem is they will always have to even if broadband is truly ubiquitous. The reason is cell phones and other gadgets are designed to fit in your hand. It doesn't matter if it's a PSP, a Treo or an iPhone or whatever comes next. From a UI perspective, mobile sites work beautifully on phones - as do information apps if the platform supports it.

    This means web sites increasingly need to give consumers a choice when browsing from a mobile device. Many do not. They "sniff" what browser you're using and then serve up the site that will give you the best experience. The problem is that browser sniffing, particularly on devices like the iPhone, doesn't work because it supports all page formats.

    Consider weather.com, for example. The popular weather site determines your browser and then serves up a site that's best formatted for it. Enter the iPhone, however. There are times you want to browse the lite version and other times you want the big daddy. Unfortunately, they don't give you a choice and this in particular has caused some iPhone users to get upset.

    The mobile web is far from dead but consumer choice is just as critical as these devices get more sophisticated.
    In other words, it is about consumer choice ....

    So it makes a lot of sense to have the choice between ESPN.com and ESPN.mobi

    ESPN.com is still available to all - including those mobile users (presumably with time to kill) who really *do* want to read about Brett Favre's favorite pregame meal, learn about the childhood memories of Randy Moss or see video of Shaq's south Beach mansion.
    But ESPN.mobi provides a slick, efficient, well-crafted set of just scores and headlines relevant to the user's very specific mobile usage context.

    Ah, back to the old argument again.

    New TLD's simply replicate the domain space, they offer nothing new. That's why they are introduced so sparingly. Or used to. Because the new game is for the Registry to reserve names and auction them later on.

    .mobi is under fire for one sole reason: it proclaimed to be the mobile/cellular dedicated space. In fact, it is nothing more than what .ws, .nu were and what .asia will be: an excuse to introduce the same namespace, all over again.

    Web site content can be served according to the device that accesses it, one does not need a separate TLD for it - especially since .mobi is no longer pushed as a segregated, "holy grail" TLD for the mobile telephony users.

    My thought was along the lines of such a possible scenario. XYZ website owner doesn't even have a fraction of ESPN's web media budget. Along comes mobile technology developer ABC to fill the void, which is a cost effective solution that will allow XYZ website owner to present his non mobile compatible website to mobile consumers. Off in the corner of the near future, doesn't this seem like the only probable outcome?

    Once cost efficiency and technology join hands, it would seem highly probably that .mobi will have no other choice, but to bow and exit stage left.
