Not only are Chinese users reluctant to switch to a newcomer but many young Chinese students without strong English skills don't even know how to spell the name MySpace. "You tell a typical kid in China who has never heard about MySpace and ask the person to spell it, 90% of the time the kid has no clue," says Chen.
When China brings down the great firewall, maybe these students will have a chance to peruse the real Internet.

Actually there are more students studying English in China than the entire class of 2009 in the US. Especially having had the Olympics in Beijing, exposure to foreigners increased the interest in non-Chinese languages.
So why are there virtually no English Languages sites base in China, or indeed aimed at the Chinese people?
From what I am seeing most of these arguments are largely put up by American's that are trying to get back to the golden days of the cold war. I for one would like to see the American military out of Europe, because the intention seems to be to create artificial barriers between Russia and the rest of Europe, as the US realizes that expanding economic links actually leaves them somewhat out in the cold.

You're complicating something that it's simple: China's export machine needs communication with the world and it won't happen in Chinese but mostly in English.
The Chinese have never been under any illusion that need to market in the language of the buyer. That is why they have been so successful. It seems to be the US that has the big issues when it comes down to the cultural basics of marketing.

Sorry, but the Net was created with ASCII in mind.
but many young Chinese students without strong English ...
Correct!
there have many students only chat by QQ or play games, THAT ALL!!!
Well, of course it was invented by Americans for Americans.
Actually, if you are talking the domains, you actually mean the Web, which was invented by a Brit in Switzerland.
When it comes to the Root, that is run by ICANN. Within six months you are going to see an explosion of Top Level extensions in foreign characters, but worry not you will still be able to use the ASCII equivalents and end up at exactly the same place. Indeed, because Chinese and other language characters are input using the ASCII character set, many of the locals will indeed continue to use the ASCII extension. It doesn't take much of genius to remember a three letter character series you have used continuously for the last ten years even for a Chinese.
Where your argument totally breaks down is the telephone or radio test. If you think Chinese can actually remember and spell out English keywords without the greatest of difficulties, you are from the Planet Zogg.

English proficiency in china is much lower than even korea (well known for poor english), not to mention japan and taiwan.
Some supermarkets signages for laughs.

I believe you're making a bad marketing out of a false argument. Their prices made their "marketing" so successful.
(some sell it cheap and that is it)

What does the US in Europe have to do with anything, does that somehow effect the way Chinese use the Internet? I for one hate to hear people bash America for no reason other than their personal gain. America is and always will be the shining example of freedom in the world. America has flaws but there is no better government.
The web was created in America, by American's, reread your history. Study about DARPA and you learn what the American Military can do.
RD- I respect your opinions on IDN and such but when you spend your time bashing my country I fail to see your logic and how your bashing of the USA has anything to do with domains, IDNs's or ASCII. Beyond that the argument is pointless and vague and should be placed in the political section where bashing is the norm.
The dollar has nothing to do with the slave labor issue in China, Chinese products are cheap because they are made by slave labor, little children and underpaid/non-paid adults.

It is precisely because we understand what they are capable of that is now time for them to go home. Anyway, due the incompetence of the current regime, you couldn't even finance a war, so please don't start an unnecessary one on our doorstep, by playing stupid cat and mouse games with the Russians who only real purpose is to thwart further European integration.

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't mother Russia just invade another country? Do you consider that a stable regime? And the during the cold war Russia can barely feed it's soldiers so America has allot of wiggle room to become like other nations.
America is the reason the Berlin wall came down, if America was not there you would be living behind barbed wire right now with no Internet access, welcome to Russia.
So that is what your government that stands for universal freedom put on your school curriculum is it?
America is probably one of the reasons the Berlin wall stayed up for so long. The cold war is over. Get over it.
Very few of us this side of Altantic actually buy the Georgia story. Personally, I am much more inclined to accept Putin's version of events than Bush's. After the WMD excuses for invading Iraq over oil, only a fool would not see that Georgia is about getting Caspian Sea reserves into the tanks of America's SUVs.
As for South Ossetia, did you ever consider what they want? It sure as hell isn't to be part of Georgia, with or without Russian intervention.

That's actually pretty funny. You can choose communism over freedom my friend, that is the great thing about freedom. I wonder if the French too would like to turn the clock back and become of part of Hitler's conquest. I suppose if America didn't invade Normandy the French would of had a better chance too? LOL. Seriously, your hatred of America literally confuses your facts of world history, like it or not American troops have died in many parts of this world for the world's freedoms. You don't have to like it or appreciate it but it's a fact. You want to attack American school you but condone the slavery of school aged children in China, wow!
