Question New Domain Name for Internet Porn - Dot-XXX?

Interesting Article... Maybe another Landrush someday:

State House Passes Resolution Supporting New Domain Name For Internet Porn
    Crusade Started By N.C. Woman
    Kamal Wallace, Staff Writer

    POSTED: 3:20 p.m. EDT September 24, 2002
    UPDATED: 6:33 p.m. EDT September 24, 2002

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Online users are often confronted with spam involving pornography on the Internet. A local woman is trying to change all that.

The state House passed a resolution requesting the state's congressional delegation support a new .xxx domain name for pornographic Web sites.

Mary Conyers' crusade began when her young granddaughter opened a pornographic Web site by mistake shortly after Sept. 11.

"I promised her that day that I was going to do something to stop this and I've got to keep that promise," she said.

Conyers has pushed for months to have porn Web addresses end with .xxx, instead of .com or .net. On Monday, Conyers' group, Protect Every Child, got a boost from the state Legislature. House members unanimously passed a resolution requesting the state's Congressional delegation support the .xxx domain name.

Some in the Internet security business praise the efforts of Protect Every Child, but say changing to .xxx will be a tough road.

"It's entirely voluntary and it doesn't stop anybody overseas from keeping a different domain name," security consultant Gary Cooper said.

The problem is not about just Web sites. Companies are also able to obtain your e-mail address to send photos.

"If your e-mail address is on a company Web site, that's a very good way. There are programs just like Yahoo or Google that search the Internet. These programs search the Internet for e-mail addresses," Cooper said.

There are a few services that can help filter out pornographic e-mail, but online users do have to give up some freedom. Sept. 11 made Conyers fight for her First Amendment rights and those of her grandchildren.

"I was Minnie Mouse before Sept. 11. Now, I'm trying to be Mighty Mouse," she said.

The amount of unsolicited e-mail on the Internet is exploding. According to recent numbers, 37 percent of spam represents a type of get-rich quick scheme, 25 percent is adult-related and 18 percent deals with software offers. Various promotions for investments and vacations also fill users' e-mail boxes.

Good sleuthing Duck! One more reason for me to avoid adult related domain names. It'll be interesting to see what happens with this. I've got a couple political contacts (friends) here in NH, that might like to jump on the bandwagon and get some publicity.

I almost registered a couple .xxx names when www.new.net first released them. Back then--there were reports that a lot of browsers would not support them--and that's what kept me from grabbing a couple.

I just visited their site--and now they have the following distribution partners: Earthlink, Prodigy, NetZero|Juno, EasySpace--and a few others.

    So who knows....

When and if ICANN (whose oversight is managed by the US Department of Commerce) approves a XXX TLD, the new.net names will be as worthless as their .biz domains are now.

Actually new.net never had any .biz domains. >biz belonged to someone else. Although I do agree that new.net is facing an uphill battle.

You are right of course. I seem to lump all the Internet anarchist alternate roots together in my mind...

.xxx may have been a good idea 10 years ago, but it's too late now. Adult sites are already operating under may other domains and from countries of multiple legal and moral jurisdictions. You could not offer enough money to whitehouse.com, playboy.com, or sex.com to give up or clean up those names.

The better choice is the current proposal to create the .kids.us domains that will insure US jurisdiction, and limit what can be put on the domain. Then just create kid safe browsers that don't read anything BUT a .kids.us or other verifiable kid safe domain.

Actually, New.net would be a great way to promote alternate roots specifically AS private controllable internetworks by using the non-publicly accessible extensions to it's greatest advanatage to keep unwanted material out. Parents would gladly download or add filter plugins that let them control public from private domain extensions. Public domains promote freedom of speech. Private domains could promote freedom FROM unwanted speech.

Ultimately, the .xxx domain will just make porn easier to find and make more money for the domain market and potentially create even more sites. We don't needs more extension for Porn, we need extension guaranteed free from it with a method to limit browsers to them.

Both .kids.us and .xxx should be used. I think getting the porn off the .coms would make the TLD more attractive and much less cluttered. A lot of people are afraid of having their kids run into that stuff using the net for just regular searches. They feel the filters don't eliminate that risk. Relegating all new porn material to the .xxx would make the "OLD" porn seem just that. (Stale)

Preventing any further registrations of new porn sites on the .coms at the same time would also help. A lot of other elders don't want to keep running into that crap when looking for serious content. In the future, they would like a simple answer (.xxx) for the answer to "Where do I get my porn"

The .kids.us is needed for more than just filtering out porn. As I understand it, they will use some of the other categories that parents want their kids to avoid. Maybe they should change it to .PG13

Restricting Adult sites to .XXX is impossible. It won't happen. It can't happen. However, to make a portion of the internet safe for kids, that is a possibility. If there was a TLD for safe sites only, then there could be a option implemented into computers that restrict internet access to only that TLD. There could be "one homepage" that simply acts as a portal for the safe internet.

    .xxx will never work.

.kids.us sounds like it might work.

    .com already works.

You can't get porn off the .coms - too many crosslinks and legal problems. Also porn is not just on .coms, I've got some .nets as well and there are loads of other tlds with porn.
