Exclamation Time running out for public comments on ICANN-VeriSign settlement

Hi folks,

There's not been much discussion on this forum about this important matter, that will see .com prices rise substantially over the next 7 years, instead of falling as they would if operation of the .com registry was up for tender.

You can see the primary documents at:

http://www.icann.org/announcements/a...nt-24oct05.htm

along with current comments archived at:

http://forum.icann.org/lists/settlement-comments/

You can submit comments by email to settlement-comments@icann.org (they use a challenge-response system, so you will need to click on a link that gets sent to you, for your submission to be accepted -- it gets posted on the website about 12-24 hours later).

For other sites with commentary on the proposed settlement, and its ramifications, see:

http://www.icannwatch.org/
http://blog.lextext.com/blog/icann//index.html
http://www.byte.org/
http://www.cavebear.com/cbblog/
http://gnso.icann.org/mailing-lists/...es/registrars/

Overall, I think it's a terrible deal for consumers. Make YOUR opinion count, though, by submitting a comment. If a few hundred members here submitted their comments, it might help ICANN rethink this proposed settlement, and send it back to the drawing board.

Sincerely,

George

I have to say this looks like a done deal! I don't think you opinions are being actively solicited.

Yes, if we consumers acted in a united way, and the government would stop granting monopolies, and the market were opened up, prices would have to come down.

George, what do you think about drafting a "cut and paste" letter that DNFers can just sign their name to and send in? It might enable us to get more participants.

I would like that. Would save me a lot of time.

I think it would be more effective if folks had to write up a few words of their own, instead of simply repeating one set of comments via cut/paste.

Re: Time running out for public comments on ICANN-VeriSign settlement

I don't know much about it, so I wouldnt know what to include in a a letter. I'd definitely be up for signing my name to something though. I don't think that raising domain prices would help the market at all, regardless of what the money will be spent on.

Re: Time running out for public comments on ICANN-VeriSign settlement

I'm up for submitting my comments, but I think it may be more noticible to ICANN if many similar letters from the DNF members were to be sent as you'd get more participation, and it may draw the attention of ICANN more if they were all similar and from heavy domain buyers like most DNF members are.

Re: Time running out for public comments on ICANN-VeriSign settlement

I think a prewritten comment would be nice. Maybe people could try to add a sentence or something to kind of individualize it. At the end it could be like:

Re: Time running out for public comments on ICANN-VeriSign settlement

The ICANN meeting is this week, and pro-VeriSign people (if they are for real) are posting comments.

If only 1% of DNForum's 20,000+ members sent in comments, it would help show where the wider internet community stands.

You can submit comments by email to settlement-comments@icann.org (they use a challenge-response system, so you will need to click on a link that gets sent to you, for your submission to be accepted -- it gets posted on the website about 12-24 hours later)
