.tm domains to be available again in March...

Got an e-mail to let me know that I can renew my .tm domain I registered way back in 1998 and that new registrations for .tm are also starting again.

The cost (from Netbenefit) £550 plus tax!!! But it does cover 10 years.

Also new registrations are for a minimum of 10 years as well (though they do say if you cancel the domain, they refund the different of what is left).

Well, I don't think I'm renewing of buying any new ones... But I do have: business.tm, bank.tm, media.tm and hollywood.tm until atleast March 21....

So what do others think of .tm

On first look, it looks like just another big cash-in by Netbenefit.

They have never been cheap or customer-oriented.

However, have a look at this:

    http://www.nic.tm/new.html

$600 setup? I mean wtf? All they have to do is enter a name in a database. Even Elton John wouldn't charge $600 to do that!
I know a T1 line that cost less than $600 to setup!

Until Turkmenistan spits the dummy again and shuts down the DNS like last time.

Then your google page rank will be worthless, again.

    I have:

aa.tm, cool.tm, html.tm, titanic.tm and volcano.tm (don't ask me why!). Anyway I knew something was up with .tm not long ago when these names (which I'd managed to get DNS changes made on, by email over the past few years) started to resolve back to an old IP address. I think Netbenefit rolled back the zone file records for some unknown reason.

$1000 for any of those names; forget it. They can keep them. Waste of money. No surprises, though, if NetBenefit are involved.

The only one that is any good in my honest opinion is 'registered.tm' - if that drops it might be worth $1000 but I won't be paying for it regardless.

Turkmenistan didn't actually shut down the DNS. They got 'offended' at all the registrations with words like '****' in and suspended new registrations. I was able to get DNS records ammended by email/phone a couple of times since early 1998 (how long ago was that! ... half a decade ago. I still remember registering them one evening!)

Yeah! It was certainly that time in my life! Fortunately they were only about $50 per name.
