.what?
Interesting trend. Do you have the .com and other extensions to compare to though? It is possible that the entire internet is growing and .com increased at an even faster rate. The .COM = America plus some other places too, and that's the way it's going to remain. It's so heavily ingrained in everyone's head. CocaCola.com or .us - only one commands the general public respect.
The number of results returned is geo specific, so the number of results returned will differ depending on where you're located.
While I don't question .US is doing well, a large quantity those indexed pages already existed before .US was made available for public registration (due to sub-domain use by government organisations). My guess is that these account for approximately 50% of the results returned.

While the number of Google results can be an ok indicator, that's all it is – and a sketchy one at that.

Yep, you're right of course Rob. But in any event, whether the US pages were largely State oriented etc, or new pages since the namespace was opened to the public, the numbers still reflect that a ton-o-stuff with the US label is being put in front of people. I have to think that with the use by the Cities or States and their departments over the last 20+ years, the jump to recognition and acceptance of commercial or personal sites using .US won't be too tough. Huge traffic sites like Imageshack.us, Del.icio.us, and Music.us show it can work.
