Actually, I have seen precious little evidence that any of the other Registeries are capable of taking on Verisign's Mantle in the short-term. For ICANN the risk of handing dot com over to any of the other was probably just too great. Whilst Verisign undoubtedly exploits it position, it has the resources and know-how required to ensure the stability and future development of the web's most important registries. It is still doubtful that anyone else has earnt the right to step in to Verisigns shoes particularly at the dot com level. It would have been very difficult to justify handing over dot com when nobody else reached the required standard to takeover the dot net.Originally Posted by IT Web Team
However, I feel Verisign could be doing more to push things forward. Pushing through the implementation of the First Level of IDN is something that should be being made a priority, and I feel should have been made an explicit target for them during their next period of tenure.
