In other words, they don't need the money from the price increases, they only do it because they are allowed to as part of the contract.

A note about renewing multiple years in advance: you can only expense the current year, for tax purposes. So while it's tempting to renew several years, your savings will have to be allocated during the years of renewals you're paying for.
This is the problem in corporate world. They continue to milk their cow 'till they die.

It's across the board. All registrar that offer .com and .net will be affected, whether you are using Enom, NeedName.com, GoDaddy, Moniker, etc.

right. I guess i'm just waiting for some news from moniker, cos i have gotten nothing from my rep! I used to get these in the past (that was when my rep was a different guy), but I had to stumble upon an email from namecheap to actually get this news..

Businesses raise prices every year because the cost of doing business goes up. As long as it isn't excessive I don't have a problem with it.
10% for three of every five years with an endless open ended contract?? I was once in an electronic business. We made about 10% overall. A domain registration costs about 17 cents!! It must be nice if someone will hand you a monopoly. You have got to wonder just how ICANN's board must benefit from this illicit contract that they approved. There is NO reason for a price increase other than blatant, raw greed. Not that it matters but I DO have a problem with that! When Verisign ups the annual fee for your best domain to $5K/year (which may be coming), I assume that you'll be OK with that??!

A $2.50 reg fee would explode the industry. Every man woman and child would get in on it.

but I am curious t figure the 'costs" of Verisign that trigger this price rise.

    use solar power already.

What I do not understand is why this has come down to them doing as they wish without anyone having a word in it. We see ICANN, a non-profit organization, spending tons of money on luxury items, travel, etc., domain pricing increasing when they should be decreasing -- yet no one can do anything about it. It is just wrong. I guess that is business and life, but still something should be done to stop businesses like this.

As someone who was around before ICANN, I totally agree. The intent of setting up these entities like ICANN was good (at the time), however now there are far too many governments, lobby groups and other entities involved. Just look at the process for these new gTLD's!

Aside from the UN, there is no other credible entity to manage this thing - at the moment anyway.

Yep, things could get worse - imagine if domainers were running the domain name system

They will keep raising the prices until they get back to the old netsol porice of $35 per year

Having registrar experience I can tell you most registrars take this opportunity to squeeze domainers for extra revenue on top of the increase.

VeriSign announced that as of July 1, 2010, the registry fee for .com domain names will increase from $6.86 to $7.34 and that the registry fee for .net domain names will increase, from $4.23 to $4.65.

I'm not sure, but do you think ICANN might be convinced to allow price increases just to stop people buying domains without really developing them?

    It doesn't make any sense.

The domainers will continue to buy domains as long as the revenue is greater than marginal cost.
