Genetics.us, Genome.us, Nanotech.us, CosmeticSurgeon.us
CellularPayments.com, ElectronicsEngineering.com,
HollywoodTimes.com, TechnologyTimes.com are on sale.
The sale was confirmed and he assumed the value of $2M. Thinking a good ROI from his $100K+ buying cost. I'm not sure where he/she got this information about the domain name.
Well, maybe he got excellent business plan.
Good luck,

Smart people and brilliant companies can make completely idiotic decisions. Nintendo for example, was rolling in cash. It was their terrific idea to invent The Virtual Boy system, which then hardly sold any copies and was a massive failure.
Culinary.com counts as a stupid decision because it doesnt get sufficient traffic to justify the expense, nor is it a common enough word that people will naturally visit it for food info. Its not equal to Food.com or eat.com for example, and a $2M estimated value is ludicrous.

If it's for cooking schools, the tuition at top schools can be $20K or more per year, so it could have a suitable business model. It all depends on how they use it, though.

Yes,
Depending on the buyer,
$100k may have been a steal for them.

I don't see what you have to be upset about, draqon.

Email its<at>mercurylink.net with a desired account name to get setup. After catch auction system now
well, it smells a bit like a publicity stunt for Pool.com
and besides, i always like to mock ignorance. Food.com, is a two million dollar domain. Culinary.com, isn't. Not by any stretch of the imagination.
Draqon,
Yeah it is really astronomical....but I don't want to say anything destructive about him. He is not just some unknown entity -- he made a personal and humble post about his purchase at Domain State. Because of that small connection I feel inclined to at least say encouraging things.

It has now whois: someone J, Ritch like he said in domainstate. WOw nice, so pool got over $100K for that one.
Zero Accomplisher and .mobi millionaire
Pool most likely didint get anything near $100k for it.
Or else they wouldnt be stealing SNs registrars and getting so many reg's.

"Stupid' isn't an appropriate term here.
They placed their bet, and... do you know what cards are in their hands ..?
Just a thought, but advertising is pretty cheap right now and should be for a little while; all the same, over the long term it goes up and down. If you wanted to create a brand in the "food" industry, right now... Culinary.Com will definitely save you well more than $99,500 in advertising fees over something like JohnsCulinary.Com or Cheap Kitchen Stuff or (as George suggests) LearnToCook.Com (which wouldn't be cheap either) or FoodSchooling.com. Etc etc.
Simply, someone would have to hear "Culinary.Com" less times to remember it. Even if they have to hear it 5 times instead of 6, that's an estimated savings of more than 10%... if you spent $1 million on advertising, you just saved over 10%.
So ... If they actually had $100k to pay for it, then they probably also have the advertising budget to back it up with. If that's the case, it was a steal. This, in itself, assumes they were an "end user" and not a reseller hoping to turn a quickie profit.
Well... Just my humble opinion. ;-)

I personally think dragon's opinions make perfect logical sense. As his "perspective". There has been a lot of commentary on Culinary.com, and some well-respected people have said "I don't see this as very valuable." I think those opinions are valid too. As opinions. People seems to always collapse "opinion" with "reality" and get mad if you point that out.Originally posted by draqon

Everybody that says Culinary.com is well worth $150g, has a completely valid perspective too. *For them.* The only HARD evidence is yet to be revealed.
What will be the Return on Investment for this domain name? Well it help aid venture funding? Well it help establish its service as "premiere" compared to others in the space (much like Stamps.com seems more legit and memorable than e-Stamp.com?) The "PPC" crowd I'd agree is right in thinking that throwing up a pay-per-click website would not make this domain worth very much at all. The "developer" set are clear that branding like this is the holy grail for any sector... especially if you're familiar with this one. If Food Network paid $150,000 for this domain, I'd find it hard to believe that people wouldn't nod their heads and say "I get it". 2 million? A bit pricey, but seeing as how most of us don't have that type of money lying around, I doubt we could wrap our minds around what might be worth that much either.
My 2 cents,
