Just a question....But what is a mining vacation ?

Not to be flippant, but it's as simple as that: a vacation spent mining. Many precious metal and gem mines now offer packages to families and individuals allowing them to dig for gems, pan for gold, etc., and keep what they find. These packages will often include tours, training, camping or other lodging, dining, etc. People have begun planning their vacations around stopping at one or more of these mines in order to try their luck.

The popularity of mining vacations has really exploded over the last year (as a quick google search will verify), I think driven partly by reality TV shows like "Gold Rush: Alaska" on the Discovery channel.

I've personally never done it (like everyone else here the treasure I hunt is of the alphanumeric type), but I have a few friends who have, and they say it's a really fun family activity and even the rush from finding just semi-precious stones make a day digging outdoors worthwhile.
