How do I make my site open to the index page of my forum which is located in a different directory?

do a meta tag redirect from index.html to your desired start page - it's the easiest way

<META http-equiv="refresh" content="0;URL=http://www.new-url.com">

you can also do it through dns, but if you want specific advice you'll have to tell us your registrar

Thanks, I managed to get it straight, but I like this method as well and will keep it for future reference.

well... search engines dont like the meta redirect, with some search engines sites with the refresh attribute set to less than 30 seconds have been banned as defaulters. and the crawlers also tends to leave as soon as they encounter a refresh attribute because it's a spammer favorite. There is very little time for them validate whether its legimate or not.

Better you use .htaccess with something like :

Redirect oldpage.html http://yoursite.com/directory/newpage.html

or mod rewrite could be a good option too, if your host supports it.

DirectoryIndex /phpBB2/index.php
image paths may need to be re-defined, though...
