Thumbs up City Portal Script PT.2

I figured I needed to start another thread since my post will get lost in the mix.

Note To FTC: I am not getting paid for this testimonial.

    My Experience with phpcityportal:

I purchased this back about 6 or more months ago and have been fiddling with it here and there and now have mine finally set up.

    http://www.lawrenceburg411.com/

Now, after I purchased this I had alot of question and fixes that I had no solution for. While the support and updates to the script was frustrating.

    That has since changed.

Come to find out, the site/script has new owners and they are the most helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly people I have had the honor to meet.

I had told them of the problems I had with the script and immeditally they went to work. Even going as far to fixing the problems themselves after me giving them my login info.

The difference between when the script came out to now is like night and day. Especially with the support the offer.

By far, this script is worth every penny I paid for it, and is WAY cheaper than the competition and has alot more features with more planned.

I just wanted to thank the great guys over at PHPCityPortal for everything and keep up the good work!

PS. It is hardly ever...... Well hardly never that I sit down and write a review, but these guys deserve it.

I really have no traffic to speak of yet. Lawrenceburg is a small town. Plus I have set mine up to be free for my users.

But the way it is set (the script), if you have big city traffic, your almost guaranteed to make $$$

What knowledge level is required? I know HTML but that is about it. What else is needed?

    Thanks!

Thanks for the review sterling. I'm looking to build a new city portal on a llll.com domain about Albuquerque, and it is either going to be built on phpcityportal or edirectory. can't decide which yet, but that review has helped

You will need to know a little about php and MySql (Setting up the database).

But, the guys over there say they have updated the install directions so it's much easier to setup. But, if you just know a little HTML, there always has to be a starting point for you to learn more.

If you have any questions with the setup or problems with the script, these guys have great support and will do anything to help a customer. That is what has really impressed me.

    Good luck.

Is there an easy way to alter your titles for each individual page for SEO, I noticed they were all the same on your site.

Most of the pages are encrypted such as contact.php and classifieds.php, so you would have to contact them and ask them to hook ya up. Most of the time I emailed them, they emailed me the unencrypted version of that file but I dont think they wanna make a habit of that.

I just setup a little something to play with. I did, and now I am working on other things.

I think if you've got a huge amount of cash to invest in a project that you know should work, then custom development is a possibility. If you're on a budget like most of us here, phpcityportal looks like a very good alternative

KankakeeCounty(dot)com is an example of the script in action as well.. Generating about 30,000 pageviews a month.. SEO is great as they have built in META tags for each page and custom page...

    Hope this helps

What's the best way in anyone's opinion to build up a city site? I'm using free premium business listings to attract local businesses, but any other ideas would be useful!

You have to provide/offer something they cant get elsewhere, or provide it cheaper they can get elsewhere. A simple listing on a webpage is no longer a huge value to a business owner.. Now drive them traffic, drive them customers, then they will be all ears. The script I use has a built in module for quotes so a resident can fill out a form to have say an HVAC guy call them with a price. A great Selling point if you ask me..

It's really groundstage at the moment. I have review and promotion features on there... It's difficult, because I don't know if I should attract the public to the classifieds section first then attract businesses when there's traffic, or the other way round!

    Jilo,

As I am sure you have heard 1000 times in the domain market, CONTENT is KING... So to answer your question you need content, content that provides something and that changes regularly, maybe weekly at first but eventually daily/hourly... if you check out my Site I use Facebook as a way to keep people connected. I have almost 900 fans on their and to show you the power of facebook. I released a jobs module on the site a few weeks ago. Right after i put it on their I sent out a facebook update, within 2 hours I have almost 500 views on the new jobs section... HUGE potential...

So get a local car dealer on board to list cars, and a local realtor to list houses. hook them by promising them that the listings will ALWAYS be free for them for helping you out on ground level. once you have them onboard then move on to the next stage, promotion. promote the website through local flyers, banners, maybe a local sponsorship of a kids sports team...

Sterling, JamesDavid, and others, one hell of a 'thank you' to you all.

With a portfolio of over 420 US .info county domains this is extremely interesting.

Thanks for sharing all the info, it is really apreciated.
