You can do this with ffmpeg, which is the best open source video converter around. It'll convert any format to any other format. However, it isn't very easy to learn (command line driven) so it's only worth a shot if you're willing to play with it a bit.

It'll work on both linux and windows servers, but you'll need the ability to compile and install scripts (usually root access).

    Good luck,
    Luc

Would this allow a user to copy and paste the youtube video url then click convert and it converts it to mp3 and allows the user to download that file?

    Thats what im looking for.

ffmpeg is a backend multi format media file converter. it'll convert any format to any other format and rip out audio from video, etc, BUT you'll have to program the actual use interface yourself.

it's not GUI driven, it's command line driven. and not very use friendly unless you know a bit about programming and command line applications.

also, keep in mind that to do what you want to do... you'll need a lot of resources. #1, you'll need a lot of bandwidth to transfer a video from youtube and then rip it and then send the audio back to the user. you'll also need a pretty good server, because data extraction from media files is a very resource intensive process, especially once you have a few users doing it at once.

No script will lessen the load and bandwidth on your server. ffmpeg is the standard (as far as I'm concerned).

From your own computer however there are some awesome converters. I just bought my daughter some ipod thing and have had to delve into the music video and audio etc. After a good week of trying every converter and downloader out there, Freecorder was my final choice. It doesnt do any harm to your computer and its very user friendly. There really isnt a need to make this server side anymore. Freecorder will have all its tools on your IE browser just above the tabs. My 11 year old understands it very well after being shown maybe twice, and it's powerful.

Again, as for a server side script. ffmpeg is the best choice. I agree with Luc

You should also note that some videos/music from youtube will get you in hot water. They get trouble often but are big enough to fight back a little. They still feel the pain. One lawsuit to a Regular Joe can be devastating.
