Cogah.com

Hi all,
Any comments/suggestions on my newest website, Cogah.com, would be appreciated

It's a website tools site (so aimed at web designers/developers). It currently has 9 tools, ranging from a popularity stats checker to a website creator.

Is still a WIP in parts, so any comments woulbe great

Thanks a lot,
Tristan Perry

Hello Tristan.

Good start.

One thing though -- your domain name.

If you're trying to brand it as having a different name for its content, be prepared to spend quite a bit of money. Just look at Amazon.com as a good example. To nearly 99.9% of the population, who knew its product was books! Now, those same people including a significant number of teenagers, know without hesitation what that website is about, at least their bread-n-butter industry.

Personally, I wouldn't have figured yours to be a website tools site if you hadn't told me or unless I had visited the site (which I did). I also skipped over it in the forum listing at least a couple of times or more as it didn't have a meaning that I immediately grasped. I finally looked -- more for curiousity sake especially when I looked at the number of responses you had received until mine. In some cases, that less-descriptive name approach could work -- I just don't believe that path is effective for you in this particular case.

Company domain-named sites have different rules whereas yours is targeted content. If Cogah is your business name, you may not want to mix the two. Since I hadn't heard of the name before, I found that its definition isn't in dictionary.com, either so I still don't know what its significance is.

~~~~~~~~
One way to fix this, if you so desire, without moving the content to a different domain account is to register another more descriptive domain name and 301 redirect it to cogah.com. There are a couple of options to do this, each with their own pros and cons. Just be aware that the 301 redirects aren't considered at the top of the SEO food chain, but can be quite lucrative from a marketing standpoint. I wrote an article on just this a little while back.
To see an example of this methodology in action, there is a page URL that contains video content on the subject, 'robotic surgery'.
In that case, the secondary domain URL http://www.roboticsurgery.tv (since .tv is being used mostly for video content) is a much simpler URL and is more descriptive and a more targeted name than the page URL it is being redirected to. Even if that page URL was more descriptive (e.g. words separated by hyphens), it would still remain not so easy for folks to remember although it would have more SEO value.
Using a secondary domain in this manner still provides the option to develop that domain URL as a separate website at a later date. It would then begin to have the ability to move to the top of the SEO food chain if it satisfied other criteria.
Although this is a brief overview, give it some thought as your domain name means everything. Just know that first, it should be easy to remember.
Look at it from other people's perspective then make your decision even if that decision is to make no changes.
HTH
Hello,
Many thanks for the comments, they are greatly appreciated
Yes, the domain name was something I was thinking about quite a bit. My thinking was that - as you say, things like Amazon, Twitter, FB (etc) - have no instant meaning, hence I wasn't convinced whether an 'obvious' domain name was needed, especially since I am/was hoping for the site to be linked to quite a bit (some of the tools aren't too common, hence could get linked to quite a bit, for example)
But I do agree that it may well be harder using this route, and so I'll definitely look into your 301 redirect idea, that could prove to be a good idea. Out of interest, have you got a link to the article you wrote a while back?
Thanks again for the views; I'll be sure to remember them and monitor the situation to see if changes are needed.
Best regards,
Tristan Perry
