redesigning the site, need some input

I've decided to re-design one of my websites ( huh.in ) and i thought i would start with a new layout. This is a rough draft of something i've come up with, but i am hoping to get a little review from others on what it could use to improve and if i should even consider using it at all... So heres what i've got as of right now for the new template: http://huh.in/newhuh/huh/
and this is what the site looks like right now: http://huh.in/

Any input at all is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: redesigning the site, need some input

There is nothing on the site that let me (visitors) know what the site is about, with either layout, or the ones in the portfolio.

Just to get that info up front and clear to anybody landing on any page of the site.

Also the logo I found hard to read....
A good logo and tag line, even a header design would pull any of those layout together.

    my 2/100

You know, i am now actually thinking about going with a CMS because it makes that whole download section thing easier.

I suggest you avoid default photoshop brushes or images.

If you can elaborate a little on the scope and purpose of the site, it will be easier to contribute ideas.

The look and feel of a site depends on what you need it for; what purpose is the site solving. Your earlier design looks great; the concept is rad although the touchups couldve added more to the look.

The new concept is fairly simple in design. Depending on the objective of the site, the look of the site should change.

Well, I was hoping to offer free layouts for download, that were made by me. Before, the site put a little "template made by..." at the bottom of each template, but i was thinking of making my layouts available for download free of any sort of credit or charge at all. Also, I would include .PSD files for people to play with the templates, whereas before, only the html version of the layout was available to them. So that would be the concept, in any case, I have yet one more thing i am whipping up, maybe it will suite the site a bit better than my rough draft earlier.

Well, Here's the new something I've whipped up: http://huh.in/newhuh/huhh/ , hopefully this fits a bit more with what i said earlier to be my plans for this website.

Re: redesigning the site, need some input

I was still hunting for the purpose of the site upon first glance.

I would move the logo& tag-line to the upper left hand corner.

It's a natural place for people to look for information.
No need to re-create the wheel.

The linked tabs on either side I would move to just one side, (me I would choose the left)

The large buttons with the SE on them, why are they there? What purpose do they serve? Are they really needed?
They are taking up too much of your PRIME screen real estate and send your visitors away from your site to boot!

The match and candle seem to far away to "get" they go together. Keep like elements together for consistency. white space is not really balanced with the "free floating elements" in the header.

Outside of the above, the general feel of the new design is very warm and inviting.
