This person copied the first 2 sentances from a couple of my blog posts and then linked back a few times to my site. Do you think something like this would effect my rankings and count as duplicate content? I wasnt sure if it would be a big deal or not because he did give me links and it was only the first couple sentences. But recently i noticed a big drop in my rankings for MSN and Yahoo. I got his email off of whois and im not sure if i should get him to take it off or not because there's 4 links to my site off his page. Any ideas if this could effect rankings or not?
thanks
Well, this was a real problem some years ago.
People were using this method to get their competition banned from the engines, but it is a problem google is well aware off, and nowadays I doubt it will cause you any problems, as google knows you are the creator (obviously your content was "up there" first, else he couldn't have copied it - Yes, i'm smart).
As for yahoo and msn, I don't know. They aren't as sophisticated as google, so scammers might still be able to trick em.
He could of also used your RSS feed. I highly doubt your rankings would be effected, you had the content up first. You need not to worry, and two sentences surely will not affect you. Also, I highly doubt he is a spammer scammer if he linked back.
The only way you are punished for links is if you link back with a banned site or link farm. Link farms can link to you as long as you are not linking to them.
Well, I'm back --Yes I'm back! I'm back! Well I'm baaaaaaaaack baaaaaack well I'm back in black, I'm back in black!

Indexing Double content is a problem and will affect your SERP results.
There are several types of duplicate content:
- exact duplicates (including www and non-www, multiple domains, different parameters, different parameter order, http and https, etc)
- pseudo duplicates (same title tag and/or same meta description on multiple pages, even if the rest of the on-page content is different)
- syndication duplicates (where multiple sites run the same content produced by a single source, but with different navigation code, different HTML coding, and different site structure).
In conclusion if you find your pages are being index'ed into supplemental results you know you have a problem and this WILL affect your SERP results bottom line.

You hit a good topic on that one Acroplex. I'm competing against Wikipedia for some search words/terms and I'm the one who has the site which pertains to the stinkin search term, not a description of the search term. Looks like I'll have to pay to get above them (sponsored links).
As for the main topic of this thread: Have you checked to see where hes ranked against you ? Have you searched your sentences in "quotes" to see if anyone else is duplicating you ?
Jack
Wikipedia, Wikipedia Wikipedia get's me all the time with high ranking keywords. Acro is right, eventually Gooooogle will buy them out.
What do I do when Wikipedia ranks higher then me, I use the edit option on their page and hope my link gets indexed when a crawl is done.
I play this game day in and day out.
Between us exclusive, some page edits I've done "which they have not spotted," I'm receiving 500+ uniques per day from the Wikipedia page so it can give you traffic if you play your cards right.
