I have to say this statement is right on target....I will also say it is not cheap to be in this business.

The problem is, the drops that are happening now will never happen again and they know it...so they want to maximize every last dollar. This time next year, the drops will be much less worthy of pickup than now and each subsequent year will be worse.

The thing that does not make sense to me is that 7.5k is nothing to snapnames...I'm suprised they did not bite the bullet with their error here. Believe it or not, I find that they do this occasionally.

Re: Dirty game of Snapnames!

I agree with RaiderGirl. Snapnames is just an evil that you have to deal with if you want to grab any decent names at all. They do have the best drops.

But what's the deal with this?????????

futurebazar.com Live Auction 1d 18h 35m $60,288.00....

a typo? for 60 grand? sheesh

I only wish this were the case! Then I could retire on my portfolio...

Re: Dirty game of Snapnames!

I am finding some real deals on domains at Afternic, aka "Buydomains", if these same domains went to Snapnames, Pool or Enom on a drop, they would fetch a lot more, I know they would....And they negotiate on the price as well, I've never been a fan of Buydomains, but with the rise in prices at auction, its certainly a good place to start looking.

Make an inquiry directly i.e. through their online form. When they respond, do not email them back. After 30 days they always get back to you with a 20% discount.

I've done that too, it appears they have set prices, low and high. For example I found a domain at TDNAM for $2300, minimum bid $1750. Now I know they will agree to the $1750, but I want to get it for even less. So I go to Afternic and find the domain there, minimum bid: $1000, I get a reply back stating the minimum is $1500, I enter it and its agreed to.

I dont like playing the waiting game because you risk losing it, + they can always move it to auction.

Most of us won't care to know when a domain is acquired by drop catchers or how will they handle those names, am I right? What we actually care is a clear rule & fair bidding game.

1) The domain is in the dropping list.
2) I put it in my list and they set the minimum bid to $60.
3) On the auction time, there are no other bidder except me
4) According to the rules which can be found in snapnames website is that if there are no other bidders, the domain will go to the one and only bidder.

Re: Dirty game of Snapnames!

I've been generally happy with SnapNames but what I've seen on their site over the last 2 weeks has seriously frustrated me. Here's another current auction that has no business being this high:

cricketworlcup.com $4,100.00 Auction in progress- Join now!

A typo of cricket world cup... come on now. This is getting ridiculous. Like I said in a previous post - if these were actual bids, I could retire on my portfolio.

And regarding what RaiderGirl said - I've also found decent deals on Afternic. Just have to contact the right person at the right time and negotiate a fair price. And sometimes you get lucky and contact the less than informed person at the right time and get a domain for a steal!

Re: Dirty game of Snapnames!

As of the last 3 months, the following is my experience with snapnames.com.

[1] Domain auction date set.
[2] Domain auction date comes and goes without an auction.
[3] Domain ownership changes.
[4] Domain now owned by Tucows.com, or Reflex.com.

It's now my impression that good domains no longer drop, but some how change owners. Mediocre domains that would usually get $xxx via a transparent auction, now seem to sell for $xx,xxx. Crappy $xx domains with traffic now mysteriously run through a glitch laden minefield before they reach your account, being cherry picked of course by snapnames.com along the way. And to top it all off, if you actually get possession of a domain, it’s now held by a domain registrar no one has ever heard of, out in some obscure corner of Israel.

Unless you're in a position to negotiate a back door deal with snapnames.com, looks like the dropped domain door is being abruptly slammed in your face. It's funny that the beneficiaries of all the shady sh$t occurring this industry, are all of the same domain kings, gods, and lords that everyone here worships.

You should make this a new thread. I would like to hear what snapnames has to say about it.

Great post. If you open a new thread i will rate it 5 stars.

They keep the best for their portfolio and auction the rest, everybody should know. I wouldn't bid $60 on 99,99% of these domains.

I also wish my typos got that much attention, i would be swimming in cash by now.

Why are you surprised? Registrars themselves never release valuable names, hiding behind WHOIS privacy - indefinitely holding the domains hostage.

A new thread probably wouldn't be helpful. A snapnames.com rep would show up and start popping out Googlesque style neo-propaganda, something to the tune of the "domain industry is hot, what's your problem?". My frustration would then turn to semi-wild accusations, and I may let slip "fake auctions", "shill bidding", and "money laundering" at some point, and then end up being sued out of my shoes by a company based in the same city as I reside.
