why does it cost so much?
is that all hardware costs?
first you could sign up with a reseller program like ENOM, DirectI or WildWestDomains.
The costs vary depending on the program, Bottom level is Free, Top Level is about $6k
Once you are established and earning good revenue you can choose to get ICANN acredited, as I understand their is a cost of around $10k+ for this.
