Very interesting point about eyetracking and barriers in a website. This is one thing I don't understand though, Google and others say that the left sidebar is a good place for ads but since we read left to right, the right sidebar is the final resting place as you scan across and that, to me, seems like the place where you're most likely to take action.
If I'm reading their little heat map demo properly, it appears that people are ignoring the right sidebar in favor of clustering in the upper left corner (main content, not a sidebar). Or is it all just more ways of saying "who really knows" why people click.
