    Before You Shop At Walmart!

A few facts from an older study:

Low wages: Wal-Mart’s average full-time pay lands a four-person family in poverty. (Center for StrategicResearch, AFL-CIO; BusinessWeek, 10/6/03)

...No wages: Thousands of documented cases charge that Wal-Mart has forced hundreds of thousands ofworkers to work “off the clock.” (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission)

Poor benefits: Because of long waiting periods for eligibility and high costs, less than 50 percentof Wal-Mart’s workers are covered by the company’s health plan. Wal-Mart deliberately works employees
less than 32 hours a week so they won’t be eligible for health coverage.

Taxpayer burdens: Wal-Mart’s low wages and poor benefits force many workers to rely on publicaid. Taxpayers spend about $420,750 a year on public aid programs for each Wal-Mart store with 200
workers because Wal-Mart workers often can’t afford health insurance or food for their children.(University of California Berkeley Center for Labor Research and Education, 8/04)

Wal-Mart's low prices don't come cheap. In fact, each Wal-Mart store employing 200 people costs taxpayers approximately $420,750 annually in public social services used by Wal-Mart workers whose low wages and unaffordable health insurance mean most of them are among the working poor. (U.S. House of Representatives Education and the Workforce Committee)

Discrimination: Women at Wal-Mart earn an average of $5,000 less a year than men for doingthe same jobs. Some 1.6 million women are eligible to join a class-action lawsuit charging Wal-Mart with discrimination. Wal-Mart also has had to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to workers across the company who were subject to race discrimination. (University of California Berkeley Center for Labor Research and Education)

Destroying U.S. jobs: By squeezing them for impossibly low prices, Wal-Mart forces its suppliers to move operations and jobs to low-wage countries such as China. In 2004 alone, Wal-Mart purchased $18 billion worth of Chinese goods. (San Francisco Chronicle, 12/29/04; The Washington Post, 2/13/04; PBS “Frontline,” “Is Wal-Mart Good for America?,” 11/16/04; China Business Weekly, 11/29/04)

Union-busting: Wal-Mart fights to keep wages and benefits low by battling workers’ attempts to form unions. The company closed a Quebec store in 2005 rather than negotiate with worker who formed a union there. (www.washingtonpost.com, 4/14/05)

Child labor: Wal-Mart recently agreed to pay $135,540 to settle federal charges that it broke childlabor laws by having teenage workers use hazardous equipment such as a chain saw, paper bailers and
fork lifts. (The New York Times, 2/12/05)

You described just about every major company that has a large amount of minimum wage jobs. Companies everywhere are doing this. Not just Walmart. Low wages, poor benefits, forced part time hours to prevent employees from getting actual benefits. It is sad.

If I was worth $154 a min, I'd buy some really really really really awesome domains and develop them as personal projects.

And to think CEOs get a golden parachute when they are fired. Hurd, Fiorina, Hayward etc. Ah!!! The joys of the upper corporate world...

There are many in this country and in our congress who are strongly opposed to any increasing the minimum wage.

95% of everything sold at WallMart is produced domestically... If you live in China.

I have a great idea; GET AN EDUCATION.

You don't like the pay and benefits at Walmart? DON'T Apply there.

You want a higher paying Job? GET AN EDUCATION.

Don't have the money for an EDUCATION? Borrow it from the Government you depend on so much.

You want a job with benefits? GET AN EDUCATION.

Then we wont have to hear your sorry ass b*tching and moaning about not earning enough and how hard your life is.

Makes alot of sense at my age, not to mention the costs and less then 18% of college grads find a job after they graduate. And for the record Raider, I have a great job. Probably was making more then you do, are you working?

Sadly I was laid off because the rich are sitting on all their money or investing overseas. You have any idea how many companies have left high rise buildings in america empty to move overseas? Alot! Just in the last 10 years my little township has had 12 companies shutdown and layoff thousands of workers leaving many buildings empty and the outsourcing continues today.

My wife has her master degree and had to start her own business to bring in money. Just because you have an education doesn't mean you're guaranteed a job, let alone a good one.

(Don't get me wrong - an education is very important).

That's what happens when Government over taxes, over regulates and mandates they pay for health insurance for every employee, They relocate to a country with little or no regulation so they can make a profit, they need to make a profit for their shareholders, the "Greedy Rich" as H2FC refers to them as.

The one thing you keep on missing is, GOVERNMENT IS THE PROBLEM.

Why would you even think about depending on anyone?

I think your problem is severe lack of self-reliance... Try improving on this, your life will also improve.

    Hey Guys,

This is an interesting post and it receives interesting responses from members. Which makes me wonder what the domain industry is like.

Have you ever wonder, for the employees of walmart, if Walmart don't hire them, how many other companies are willing to hire them? What salaries are these company willing to pay? What benefits and coverages?

Questions for everyone: If you were to make enough money as a domainer, enough to higher employees, how much would you pay each employee? How much benefit would you give each? Who would you hire? And what if at some point the economy take a downturn, would you be willing to cut your profit?

Some of domainers here may have employees working for them. I'm sure you guys are generous people. How much are you paying your employees? What benefit do you offer them? What kind of insurance plan? Any sick leave or vacation? Do you pay for workers comp?

And..and if your company grew big enough to hire thousands of employees (maybe unlikely) would you favor your employees to form a union or would you fear it? Would you say "Yes! my employess are forming a union. I'm proud of you!"

Overall, do you think domainers have bigger heart than Walmart corporation?

Does anyone know how big GoDaddy is as a corporation? More or less than 1,000 employees?

US$7.25 hourly is really good for minimum wage. In hong kong, the minimum wage hourly is $4.

All I have to say is, GOOD for Walmart in keeping those money sucking Unions OUT.... The more than they can keep them out, the lower prices will be for all us who shop there... I've never been a Walmart shopper but now that I know this, I'm going to start shopping there.

And I keep telling you Hasrob, you really should move to Canada, I believe the minimum wage there averages about $9.00 an hour, more than you'll earn here.. And you would receive FREE Health Care too, well sort a Free, it would be withdrawn from your pay check whether you like it or not, I suppose that's why the minimum wage is higher there, If it wasn't there wouldn't be very much left.

So pack up your bags my friend, take a drive to the Canadian border, get out of your car and take a good wiff of that liberal progressive air.

Think about it, you wont to deal with those bad Republicans who prevented you from achieving success, Now you'll have a new Government and a new party to blame for that.
