Sure it makes sense, that's why the most advanced / educated countries are the least religious.

    Least religious countries:

    1. Sweden (up to 85% non-believer, atheist, agnostic)
    2. Vietnam
    3. Denmark
    4. Norway
    5. Japan
    6. Czech Republic
    7. Finland
    8. France
    9. South Korea
    10. Estonia (up to 49% non-believer, atheist, agnostic)

"The survey (http://www.pitzer.edu/academics/facu...rman/index.asp) concluded that high levels of organic atheism are strongly correlated with high levels of societal health, such as low homicide rates, low poverty rates, low infant mortality rates, and low illiteracy rates, as well as high levels of educational attainment, per capita income, and gender equality. Most nations characterized by high degrees of individual and societal security have the highest rates of organic atheism, and conversely, nations characterized by low degrees of individual and societal security have the lowest rates of organic atheism. In some societies, particularly Europe, atheism is growing. However, throughout much of the world -- particularly nations with high birth rates -- atheism is barely discernable."

You have to understand, atheism is the privilege of the rich intellectuals, which of course is the minority in most countries.

"Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." Jesus Christ

I'm not much on religion but for me Jesus still kicks ass.

I'd like to know what defines someone or the country as being religious?

Also - how do they define someone as being an atheist? Is it someone who doesn't believe in god or just doesn't follow one of the main religions?

Most surveys I see only ask a handful, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, and maybe a couple of others. If you're none of those they consider you atheist.

Interesting. I have studied 6th dimensional and even 7th dimensional beings (there are 12 dimensions) and these beings are still searching for the real God. They are very spiritual though, but no religion controls them. They know there are higher beings that exist above them is all, but none of them know who God really is. They are billions if years ahead of us too. We are third dimensional beings now going though the 4th dimension and we are on schedule to reach the 5th dimension by 2012. All religions are holding back the real truths. Think about it. They have to, if they want to continue to control you and your money they can't tell anyone the real truths.

How about when they dug up the Vatican library and found several alien sculls buried under the library. Of course it didn't hit the news in the USA but hit the European news. It was public knowledge on the internet and still is. Now why would those Catholics hide all of those alien bodies under the library and not tell anyone? I will tell you. Because if we prove other beings exist (and they do for a fact), it undermines virtually all religions! It is kind of late now because aliens are proven to be real a million times over. We are Eternal Spiritual Beings just having another temporary human experience to learn.

There certainly isn't no judgment day as many religions would want you to believe for more control over you. As an ex-Catholic I can hear the priest now. Only we can save you from the Eternal Fires Of Hell My Son. Come to Church and pay us 10% of your income for life and let us save you by confessing your sins and letting us forgive you and now that you know Catholicism, if you ever turn to another religion, you will never be forgiven and suffer the eternal fires of Hell my son. How about the Muslims. If you turn away from being a Muslim it is the death penalty. How is that for full control over you? "Yeah right father". The bottom line is...we are only here to learn on earth. Higher human alien beings have told us this many times over the years. Most aliens living on the 3rd dimensional plane or higher know this. We outgrew all religions over 500 years ago.

An atheist is usually defined as one who has no belief in a higher power. One who is not sure sure whether God exists is considered agnostic. A person who does not follow any major religion may still be considered a believer in God or "spiritual".

As for the Christian religion in America it has left Christ behind. I'm sure there are many true believers that actually read His words and give them thought but the broader collection of Christ based religions has become the brood of vipers like the pharisees that Jesus warned the people about. As far as I'm concerned modern Christianity ignores the words of Christ and has done more harm to His teachings than any atheist ever could......

That is the meaning but how do surveys define them? Many consider Pagans atheists.

I actually know more about Christianity, Christ's teachings, and the bible than most of my Christian friends. But you're right - most believe in it because they were raised that way and don't dare question. I respect Christ, especially as one of the most influential people in history, but I despise the misinterpretations that people have made in his name.

The misinterpretations also plunged Europe into the dark ages - science was shunned and then in the name of Christ many millions of people were slaughtered (the crusades, the expansion of the Holy Roman Empire, etc..). Many scientists of the dark ages had to either live in secret or live double-lives.

Why is it if religion is supposed to be free will there is so much violence and killing over it?

The Fifth Dimension already had a big hit in 1969, with "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In".

I grew up in a small town. I never heard anyone claim to be a atheist.

The big misconception about atheism is that anyone who is, is a "DEVIL WORSHIPING MONSTER". While I don't believe in these ridiculously marketed, power of control, cult type religions (Christianity, etc.) ~ I definitely do not worship satan, far from it... and I do believe there is a "higher power", but like us all, don't know what that is. So I excuse myself from the propaganda created to control certain groups of people and try to respect everyone and live as 'morally correct' as possible.
