Most people think the BBB is a Government consumer group when in reality it's a private company.
Shaking down businesses in nothing new with the BBB, they've been doing it for over 30 years using intimidation and preying on your ignorance to sell you a membership... A business I had which is now dissolved caught the attention of the BBB when I filed for a fictitious name statement, I received a threatening letter from them requesting me to call their office immediately, it looked like something you would receive from a Government agency, it was intimidating enough to make me pick up the phone and call them, 10 minutes into the call I realized it was a sales pitch, told him I would call him back and never did.
From what I remember, No background check was necessary, No references, No proof of having a business license, No DBA, NOTHING, all that was needed at the time was a credit card, what a joke. If I'm ever in need of services of any kind I tend to rely on personal references instead of the phone book or the BBB, Anything that's a PAID advertisement should be looked at with great caution.
