Exclamation Boston Globe Newspaper to Close!

N.Y. Times to File Notice It Will Close Boston Globe

The New York Times Co. said last night that it is notifying federal authorities of its plans to shut down the Boston Globe, raising the possibility that New England's most storied newspaper could cease to exist within weeks.

    ----------------------------

Wow, the list continues to grow.

Perhaps the biggest and best known thus far.

The end of an era in the print industry with the cessation of newspapers and many magazine seems to have really picked up speed since the start of '09.

End of an era indeed. Print based media is struggling in Oregon right now as well. Online advertising consultants will likely be in high demand here real soon, as local businesses lose age old advertising venues, and look towards the internet. Good time to own premium US based geos, too bad I'm a Euro geo guy. Print media doesn't look as shaky here in Eastern Europe yet (at least not in my corner).

The real question is what happens to Boston.com? A gem of a domain that the Globe uses for their website.

My guess is Elliot Silver will buy it

The primary issue here is an act to file closure because the workers and union would not make millions in concessions to keep it afloat.

This is perhaps a threat by the parent company but also similar to holding workers hostage, in my opinion.

I think we are looking at possibly two different models of advertising.

European markets seem to have a great feel and mix of advertising across all media and markets. Considering that european market has to reach across borders and divvy up its ad budget for not only internet advertising - but, I mean, WOW! You are looking at .com, .de, .nl, and so on. Take companies like BMW who put ads every where and even release new models on their .mobi site.

Honestly, the US advertising model is decades old and still working on the good ol' boy system. The US advertising agencies do not want a business owner to even think that they can do anything with out the guidance of an ad agency (and the billing, of course).

Whatever is going on in the auto industry will happen in the mainstream ad business. Actually, it is already going on but not getting the press. Soon it will as more and more newspapers and magazines go under.

But, guess what? Where do you think all those advertisers will end up?

GEO targeting is going to be huge.
