Hi Gee,
Very quickly (or at least an attempt to be quick).
English Constitutional Law is based on 'president and tradition' and this is then changed and augmented by laws made by Parliament, although these days it seems most of our laws are now written by non-British Eurocrats who have no respect for the 1,000+ years our 'constitution' has evolved over! But I have a very deep held feeling that we are about to take back 'our constitution' based on 'president and tradition'.
To most Britons (English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish) the bases of the constitution is that we are all equal (not in reality though - money talks as in every society), and that the law should apply to everyone, and that as long as you are not outcast by your actions or condition (i.e. in jail for breaking the law or deemed mentally unfit) that we all have an equal vote in electing the government of our country and the sub-governments (councils) in our local areas. We rely on the Courts to uphold our constitution, only a few months ago an elected MP had his right to be an MP revoked by the courts because he was found to have acted against the constitutional rules concerning the running of an election campaign.
Perhaps one of the worst mistakes the 'British' made when giving countries their independance that still had a majority indigenous population was to base many of the forms of government in those countries on the British Constitution and Government, for those countries did not have either the 'tradition' or 'presidence' on which to base their constitution.
I doubt if any of this helps but it is a vast subject, even the little I have written here could be argued against very easily. One thing is for sure though, I with the vast majority of Britons actually wish you in Egypt and all those in other countries fighting for your freedoms all the very best, our hopes and best wishes are with you all.
