Country: | Man Was Looking At Child Porn At Library, Police Say GREENSBORO -- A 41-year-old Greensboro man was arrested Wednesday evening after police said he was looking at child pornography at the Greensboro Public Library on North Church Street. Sonny Underwood was charged with second-degree exploitation of a minor. Police said the computer that Underwood was using was seized. Department of Corrections records show Underwood had a clean record in North Carolina following several drug convictions in 1997. He was being held on a $15,000 bond. -------- It was just last week that my wife and I were watching the local news doing a story on how much more crowded the local libraries are and there is even a waiting list at some branches to use the computer. People either can not afford a computer, afford the internet service, or have had the service cut off. People are also abusing the library by dumping kids off (as in pre-elementary and elementary aged children) in the early mornings and not picking them up til later. Suddenly the county libraries is every one's hang out and day care center. As one person put it, "Why not use the county's resources? I'm paying for it." My wife went to the local branch to speak with the person in charge about taking one of our therapy dogs one day a week for reading therapy. She said it was packed and kids everywhere. My concern is with no proper supervision, I am not sure I want to be responsible for someone else's ill behaved child or have the task of correcting unsupervised children. That is not our function. |

Country: | See Doc, the problem with "it takes a village", is you are part of the village ![]() Now get to the library and watch my kids so they don't get into anything! And would you mind feeding them too? I spent all my money on lottery tickets today. Maybe some organic mac and cheese cooked on your solar camping stove - you also need to be supporting local farmers and the green economy while you are at it. Chop-chop you gots work to do! |

Country: | The computers in our Libraries block out anything sexual or pornographic, I don't see why the Libraries in NC cant do the same. And I wish they would go after the people posting Child Porn as much as the people who view it. |

Love this response! Great laugh after a long day of grime from working on the house restoring our front porch and trying to finish up a bathroom installation. Everyone who believes every book site begins with or contains the word book in it, raise your hand? Everyone who believes every adult only site site begins with or contains the words hardcore xxx site in it, raise your hand? Everyone who believes every child pornography site begins with or contains the word kiddie porn in it, raise your hand? The point is, it does not matter what the county, state, or any agency blocks. It blocks what it is capable of blocking and what it has been programmed/trained to block. Every creator of such sites surely know what they must do to get around any blocks. ALL CHILD PORNOGRAPHY SITES ARE ILLEGAL AND THE VIEWING OF/POSSESSION OF IS A CRIME - yet those that enjoy this taboo know how and where to find it with all the sophisticated blocks you can think of. If someone is trying to convince me that anything like this would never happen in the state of California, that someone is helping to add to the "define stupid" theme California Librarian Fired for Reporting Man Viewing Child Porn Sacramento public library system continues policy allowing porn viewing Library visitor arrested in child porn probe (Ventura County) San Jose council votes down porn filters at public library computers California Librarians Like Child Porn Last edited by Doc Com; 06-27-2009 at 12:07 AM.. What if a student is doing a report on breast cancer? Or testicular cancer? Or even a simple report on the reproductive system. Sure, many TLDs can be left open (.edu etc..) but there are many other sites that would be flagged as pornographic even though it is educational. (Just explaining why some libraries won't block some sites). As for the OP - yeah, it's really stupid - almost as stupid as the guy (near me) who brought his PC to CompUSA to have some work done on it and they found a ton of child pron on it. I guess stupid criminals allow investigators to get a lot of research done.

As I pointed out, California is one of those states that will not block pornography sites in public libraries. Last edited by Doc Com; 06-29-2009 at 11:42 AM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I think somebody needs to define "Ignorant" for you. ig·no·rant (ĭg'nər-ənt) adj. Lacking education or knowledge. Showing or arising from a lack of education or knowledge: an ignorant mistake. Unaware or uninformed. Last edited by Raider; 06-29-2009 at 01:54 PM..

Country: | And yet a quick Google search will allow you to find proxy sites and software for these computers. :(

Country: | My apologies. I failed to post pictures along with the links above. How is it that I post links outlining California's reluctance to block pornography and suddenly I am "ignorant"? http://abclocal.go.com/kfsn/story?se...cal&id=6003891 http://www.clipsyndicate.com/publish...porn?wpid=1770 http://www.pacificjustice.org/resour...m?ID=PR080324a There is this little rule governing usage and any adult can ask that the filter be removed (IF a filter is even in place). If the library receives state funding, then they must abide by the terms to receive that funding. There is an ongoing battle between the ACLU and libraries with the ACLU declaring it violates the First Amendment. And the liberal Sacramento council voted down a measure to even use the filters. So California is no angel in abolishing the viewing or the downloading of pornography in a public library, including Orange County. Reading is fundamental |

Country: | Raider All blocks on that material will be done in one of two ways 1) They'll have a black list of sites. That's fine and dandy, until the perfectly legitimate content makes its way onto the list, like sites that might have content the people preparing the block list find morally objectionable or whatever. i.e. gay marriage. Plenty of Net Nanny programs out there block out perfectly reaosnable content. I remember hearing about one that blocked wizards.com.au for "religious" reasons... they're a home loan company. 2) They'll block files by the file's unique #ID. There are two problems with this. Insane quantities of fresh porn get made daily (thank you, internet!), and updating the list therefore cannot be an automatic process. Even if the list were to become entirely automated, it relies on legitimate porn companies to do the right thing and register their file hashes as pornographic... And I hardly think guys making kiddy porn are going to stick their heads up and do that. I get the feeling that the guys running the list would be like "Hey, this file, 12 year old blonde done by alsation.mpg... do you think it might contain illegal material, that we should potentially report to the authorities?" The folks making it aren't as stupid as a lot of the folk looking at it. If they were, there'd be a lot less of it showing up. |

Country: | I don't know what they use, all I know is that it's quite effective... I remember trying to view my stats from a adult affiliate site I use, and I couldn't access the page, Nothing pornographic to see, just stats. They also modified Internet Explorer to prevent users from making any changes to the browser.... They deleted "Internet Options" and a other features from the drop down menu's. |
