Every time there is a disaster there are sites, phone numbers, and organizations that pop up to donate to help the affected. Sadly, many of these are people trying to take advantage of the kind-hearted and doubly sad is that many of the victims of these scams never know they were scammed.

If you wish to donate, do so though a known charity (like the Red Cross).

Good words Ed, but I strongly disagree with donating to only charities that are popular by name, I could name off some charities that nobody heard of before and these are GOOD charities where the money actually goes to those who desperately need it... You need to know who your donating to, if you can make the trip like I have and actually see where your money is going, do it!, you'll find it very rewarding.

My 2 cents. Just like any purchase you make you research it. The same goes for donating money. Its your money you should make sure you do everything you can to ensure the right people get it.
