Just looking at this morning's headlines on the local scene. Doesn't seem to be much cheer going around:

This is about a 73 year old man shot and killed on his own property!

Tax Deadline Arrives On Wednesday
Well, I should be done on time.

High School Student Killed In Car Crash
Never ends. I can not count the number of times this happens

Nursing Home Shooting Suspect Getting Treatment
This is about the guy who shot and killed 8 nursing home residents.
Can't say anything good about a dick who guns down someone in their 90's in a wheelchair.
Mentally ill or not, I'd throw the switch.

Woman In Street Racing Crash Had 14 Tickets In 10 Years
This chick and someone else decided to do some street racing.
The end result was a mother and her 2 year old child killed and one other person killed when the other car involved in this street race struck another vehicle.

Yes, the news is almost all garbage. "If it bleeds, it leads" is just as true as always. The news industry (print, broadcast and online) has wallowed in blood and gore to the neglect of real local engagement. The focus is always on What is the most shocking thing that happened today. When they found that eight-year old girl in a suitcase, the TV stations were beside themselves to get the pictures on the 11:00 news. I flipped around and every single news channel had that as their lead story, including the spanish stations. WTF? Print and online were no better.

The news has been left in the hands of profiteering gore-mongers, and the industry is in it's current pitiful state because of the people who have been in charge of it. To our society's detriment. Its time to liberate the news.
