I got $80 rebate from epson on a R2400 printer last year, only took less then a month to get the check. So it was worth the trouble, there is going to be many upset people. May be another place will take them over, but it will take time and could get all messed up.

Plus, just imagine the mess this will be for the retailers who sell the products, having worked in Staples and over a year as an HP rep, I can guarantee you that most of the people who lose the rebate will be at the store demanding it.

You are correct, this could get ugly.
Already the rebate center asks to wait 8-10 weeks for processing.
And there are some major players on that list all offering BIG black Friday deals.
Doing a quick tally, there are 22 merchants on there that I have shopped with over the years. Most recent perhaps Home Depot, Advanced Auto, Adobe, Kessington, XM Satellite, and NewEgg (just looking at their online specials within the last couple of hours).
The ones that have already contacted their customers did the right thing. Those playing the wait and see game will suffer most.
Perhaps the retailers will adopt a system similar to Staples Rapid Rebate (I think that is the name) where the receipt has a number and you go on line and the rebates are automatically processed for you.
There is no sense in having to go the snail mail route.
Whoops. Guess I waited too long to mail in that rebate.
They can't get out of paying them, the rebate center will not have to pay it but incs will. Canon informed buyers to wait and hold any checks, but insured them they will be taking care of by canon. They got a new center, and are working on getting the checks sent replaced by good ones.
But if anyone cashed a check and it got returned, they will be charged by the bank. Canon said they are also working on, making all cashed checks good most likely with the centers bank. And may have talked with a judge, to give the ok to let the bank pay them as they will back them up them self's.
