    How to fix the economy.

    I like this plan...

From an article in the St. Petersburg , FL Times

    Newspaper on Sunday.

The Business Section asked readers for ideas on "How

    Would You Fix the

Economy?" (I think this guy nailed it!)

    Dear Mr. President:

I'd like to submit (below) my suggestion for fixing

    America 's economy.

Instead of giving billions of dollars to companies that

will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned

    bonuses, use the following plan.

You can call it the Patriotic Retirement Plan:

There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work

force. Pay them $1 million apiece severance for early

    retirement with the following stipulations:

    1) They MUST retire. Forty million job openings =

    Unemployment fixed.

    2) They MUST buy a new American CAR. Forty million cars

    ordered = Auto Industry fixed.

    3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage

    = Housing Crisis fixed.

It can't get any easier than that! If more money is

needed, have all members of Congress and their constituents

    pay their taxes...

If you think this would work, please forward to everyone

    you know.

If not, please disregard. Then shoot yourself!!!! = 1 job

    opening

Heh... have you considered the Maths of that?
    That's 40,000,000,000,000 USD...

    40,000 B$
That's more than 13 times the entire US Federal budget for last year, unless I'm mistaken.

Not that I like the idea considering most people don't make $1 million in their lifetime much less from 50 on. The Federal Reserve has paid out $14 Trillion so far in the past 10 months and is on course to pay out $24 Trillion. I don't know about you but my income has been in decline since this all started so it's obviously not making it's way down the line. Seems those at the top are securing their futures on the backs of everyone else.

Government would never trust the American people with one lump sum like that, They would want to control it like they do everything else. Perhaps they would disburse it in installments.. This way if a retiree dies, Government wont have to pay out the full million.

    Sound familiar?

Umm there is a major problem with that plan. America is flat broke. Who's going to give you another $40 trillion? Where would they get that money from without running the printing presses, emptying their national treasuries and emergency funds? If the US treasury runs the presses that will completely devalue the already faltering US dollar - in turn causing a whole new economic mess.

You have to raise taxes and cut spending for many many years to come. That's the price you must pay for your years of deficit spending. At some point it has to be paid back - or at least paid down.

I don't know what Americans pay to service the interest on their debt but it's probably about .15 cents of every tax dollar. That is another tax - just not called what it is.

The Republican enemy number one - Clinton at least understood tax and spend. Only spend what you have or less in tax dollars. Republicans think that is utterly evil for some silly reason because they believe it leads to higher spending and higher taxes. Yet Clinton cut more taxes than he ever raised!

It was a Republican controlled House and Senate that cut spending, cut taxes and gave us the surplus during the Clinton administration, I'll give Clinton full credit for signing off on what Republicans put on his desk though, Clinton saw past party lines and knew it was the right thing to do, Which is in far contrast to the fiscally irresponsible "Spend and Waste" Liberals like Obama and his pals in Congress.

Oh Raider. Who just added $5 trillion+ to the national debt and increased spending on a scale never before seen and left the country in a deep recession? I'll give you a hint - he's in your sig and the Democrats didn't put him up to it - though they shoulder the same blame because most of them signed off on those terrible choices! So before you chuck mud, for at least once acknowledge the utter economic failure that was the Bush government.

As for Obama's actions - he's screwed no matter what he does. Bailing out failing companies is just plain wrong - but he's not the first President to have done that, in good times or bad.

Orrrrr, you guys could admit that your economy was actually founded on the principal that 20% of the workforce simply does not get paid (i.e. slaves), and it's kind of screwed over the economic principals in a massive massive way, because the market corrects itself on its own just as much as communism is a fair and just system for all.

Put down the Ayn Rand, put down the Karl Marx, and look at the Tolstoy, and realise that the road to a healthy economy lies in the middle ground, and blaming no one but yourself for economic crisii.
The depression of the 1920s was much worse than what's currently set to happen, yet paupers made fortunes by being clever and getting work done instead of complaining about how this or that political party screwed them over.

I'm using the depressed economy to setup business deals I could only have dreamed of this time last year: organising rock tours (because travel and tech staff are dirt cheap now)

No need to get your diapers in a wad Whitebark, I was just correcting you on what you posted about Clinton....

As for the deficit under Bush, Wars aren't free you know, you have to pay for them somehow, and deficit spending increased at a faster rate when Democrats took control of both Houses during Bush's last 2 years in office.

History has proven that Democrats are simply fiscally irresponsible, It couldn't be more obvious than the last 7 months.
