Is that like General Haig announcing on national TV that he is in charge?

    I certainly hope not.

The Egyptian military is probably the most feared and most respected entity in Egypt. Hopefully, it will refrain from influencing the political process as Egypt seeks a new leader. While most people are concerned about the Brotherhood, I think a more pressing question is: what part will the military play in the coming months?

How The Mubarak Family Made Its Billions
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/0..._n_821757.html

A tourist in Cairo spots three photographs on the wall of a restaurant: one of Nasser, another of Sadat, and the third of Hosni Mubarak. He asks the owner who the first man is, and the owner tells him it's the man who overthrew the Egyptian monarchy and served as the country's president. "Who's the second man?" the tourist wants to know. "That's Anwar Sadat, our next president," comes the reply. "He made peace with Israel but was assassinated in 1981." Next the tourist wants to know who the third man is. "Him?" says the restaurant owner. "That's my business partner's father" - A popular joke in Egypt

As long as the VP is still a figure head of the government and an appointee of Mubarak (Mubarak has never had a VP in over 30 years - Egypt has never had a VP in over 30 years) it will still be a Mubarak led government and also of the military. You can't have all the appointees coming up from the same line of oppressive police, secret police, military and call it a transition. In order to be successful, the government regime of Mubarak needs a giant enama...clean it from top to bottom. Otherwise, that line of communication, power, and funneling of money to those in power still exists.

Also, as per Adam...not sure if you noticed or recall something that occured...it was more or less a signal that Mubarak had fled and the announcement was about to happen. It was when all the tanks surrounding their palaces and compounds suddenly turned their torrents away from point at the crowds. It was pretty cool. Obviously a message that came from very high up as ground commanders and individual tank group commanders would not have given that order.

the World is proud of the way the Egyptian people have represented themselves and kept it as peaceful as possible
hopefully you will get your democratically elected Government and can keep the religious fanatics out, as things will be even worse

everyone has their fingers crossed for you and your friends
hopefully mubarak gets lynched by the military at the airport and sent to jail
also hope all his billions get returned and can be used by any future governments for good!

And now for the big challenge: how to steer the "freedom-starved" crowds towards a democracy versus a religion-driven anarchy. Egypt is not a secular Muslim state like Turkey. I would not be surprised if the last remaining Christians in Egypt get terrorized even more.
